Turning the Travois
Has anyone tried the travois yet? If so, how do you turn while carrying it? It appears to me so far that you have to slowly turn it like a ship turning the rudder and then slowly turning over the course of your travel.

And if that's how it works, then it seems to me that we ought to be able to turn it a little sharper and quicker than that. It may be an extra load but it's not a battleship.

i mean, the update just came out lol. give it some time

That's pretty much what I have experienced. No turning in place. No strafing. You have to be moving forwards or backwards to even try to turn. One of the first things I encountered when trying it out for the first time.

It loses condition fairly quickly. In a trek from Camp Office to Trapper's with the travois about half loaded it lost 9% to 10% of condition. I checked what harvesting it would produce - three maple saplings - but didn't look at what was needed to repair it (if it can be repaired).

Can you drop it, turn then pick it up and keep going in the intended direction?

I deployed the travois. The only action I could take with the unloaded travois was to "open it" to put stuff in or "pick it up". This latter regardless of what direction I was facing. There did not appear to be any way to "place" it.

If there is anything in the travois pouch, even one charcoal, you now get the "carry travois" and when you do that it appears that regardless of how you're facing when you do that you will rotate into alignment with the travois direction it is facing not the other way around.

It appears that one should be careful where they're facing when they deploy the travois.

Well that's disappointing.

does it take condition damage from movement only or does it degrade over time when outside/in blizzards. If it does not take damage from being outside/blizzards, you guys do realize this is almost unlimited storage at all of your bases. you just make one for each semi main base you have.

That doesn't sound very nice. 3 maple saplings is kind of cruddy if it decays that fast. I really think they need to revamp decay system its so expensive for some items its often not worth using them. For instance i was losing about 3 condition of the hatchet to break a normal branch for a whopping 3 min gain over doing it barehanded. and the amount you lose from a crowbar to make an ice fishing hole is crazy high for something that should be almost indestructable and you can't even repair it!

When I saw word that the travois would be using saplings I was hoping it would use birch since arrows are not as scarce now that you can make the fire hardened ones for small game hunting. So I'm also a bit disappointed it will consume scarce maple saplings. Bummer.

And if it wears out that fast, I'll be using up all my maples on the travois. Needs to be a better way of doing it. Otherwise, it's one of those items in the game that I'm never going to use because it's just not cost effective.

I checked and the travois needed a cured deer hide and gut to repair condition. I expect that a (max) repair would be for 30 to 40% but my travois is nowhere low enough in condition for me to check.

Being in Pilgrim with no predator threat and using the travois to move larger amounts of gear and food, which I have a lot of, from one base to another, so far it works out to be a reasonable buff to transportation.

If I can build a single travois and then repair it as needed without using more maple saplings, then I'm OK. I just don't want to end up using a maple sapling also whenever it needs repair. Deer hides and gut are fine.

3 maple saplings is extremely steep imo
It would have been better if they made a lootable sled and put it in a specific location like the backpack, the crampons, and the ballistic vest. Maybe put it up north in hrv to give people a reason to go there

The travois needs 4 cured maple, 1 cured deer hide and 1 cured gut and takes three hours to craft. Repair takes 1 hide and 1 gut and an hour (didn't see any tool required but I haven't had to repair mine yet). Harvesting it gets back 3 cured maple.

I expect to keep mine in decent repair as deer hides and guts would be more plentiful for me than maples though I do have quite a few maples.

I just thought

Do the travois despawn if you leave them on the ground?
If this is not the case then we have the possibility of having huge unlimited storage xd
iwasa Dec 6, 2023 @ 8:55pm
I left my travois on the snow with stuff inside by the Camp Office for a night. No change and its condition didn't change (but that might be because I didn't leave it for a long time). Whether they decay normally (i.e. not from use) remains to be seen.

already pointed this out, this might be the huge storage space we've been wanting for years. Needs testing. Even if it degrades .5 percent per day without moving it that could be a huge boon for storage. the rock storage is garbage
