Started new game shot a moose and got too much food lol , what would you do?
My plan was to mix things up this time around and go fishing for a while until all my fishing lines broke, then a moose appeared before I was going to move near a fishing area. My problem is I got too much meat and don't want to waste it but don't want to just sit around until I eat all the meat before I start adventuring again lol. Had to get that moose pelt tho lol , tell me about the times you ran into this situation and what you did.

Leave the meat in a pile out in the snow. It can decay to 0%, and you can still cook it back up to 50% when you have Cooking Skill Lvl 5, as long as you leave the meat out in the open, and don't put it in a container. It will only completely despawn if you put it in a container (or *should* only despawn- barring any bugs).
You don't have to stay there and cook it all up now and eat it all now.

While farming for the expert trapper badge I collected A LOT of rabbit meat. At the same time I was grinding my bow skill up and was shooting everything that moved. Now I have piles of meat that I left behind all over the place. I've accepted the fact that some of it will likely expire and I'm fine with it. Food isn't hard to come by once you get setup with a base and secure a forge.

I would say cook it to level up your cooking skill, you can even harvest small portion by escaping mid harvest to have more meat to cool and almost guaranty to level up to the max.
If you reach level 5 cooking you can eat ruined cooked meat without risk.
And while the pelt is curing, 14 days ! You can go explore another region, just note the day you started curing it.

I'm still missing a lot of badges, I think I only have 3 since i've never focused on any of them. After I posted up here I decided to leave the moose meat, and let the hide cure and went to go fishing only to get 3 wolf pelts and 2 deer hide on my way to the fishing hole. I left some wolf meat, but have been having fun fishing plenty of fish and glad i'm decided to leave the moose meat, otherwise i'd be bored just sitting there waiting to eat most of the meat.

I believe that's how I reached lvl 5 the one and only time lol, that was my 100+ day run. Might have to go do that after some time. Even though the meat might be ruined i'll still level up my cooking.

Well, you can cook it all up to get you to level 5 faster- once you hit Lvl 5, it's safe to eat ruined *cooked* meat and fish. Or you can cook it up at a lower level, and take a chance on 50% meat for dinner. And if you do get Food Poisoning- eat as much of it as you can, since you can only get FP once- get your calorie stores way up, then take your antibiotics or drink your reishi tea, and then go sleep for a nice solid 10 hours. If you are at full or almost full HP- it actually works as a strategy (depending on which mode you are playing), if your HP is already lpw- not something I would risk doing. And never with predator meat because of the additional risk of parasites- but that's just my playstyle. Other people may be more willing to take the risk.

Yeah i'll make sure to cook it before I leave Mystery Lake, i've been having a lot of success fishing, 1 bass can feed you for a couple days! As long as you carry a lot of fishing tackle you can do well. I've usually started out by getting my wolf coat, rabbit hat and mittens, and deer pants before exploring further but this time around I just found good clothes and patched them up. I'm still wondering when i'ma leave to explore. I've explored mystery lake, pv, mountain town, crumbling highway, and desolation point decently (on my 100+ day run not this one). I've been to the other areas but mainly from starting at those areas and dying shortly after lol.

I like to store uncooked meat in caves near a burned out campfire (usually 2 campfires) with lots of water already made. I leave some outside in the snow at base buildings too. The back of the cave has plenty of room to cure pelts and skins.

If your meat or fish is laying on the floor of the cave in the back area, it really doesn't matter if it decays faster or not if you are going to leave the area anyway, since it can be cooked back to 50% with lvl 5. I've not had any disappear.

After awhile, every cave has food and water (partly as a goal). I also leave a pile of sticks behind in each cave too, next to the campfires.

When the weather turns bad or it starts getting late and you know the terrain, it's a good feeling to know you will (probably) be ok.
That's good stuff, I didn't even think about curing pelts in caves, thanks.

Lol, I know but I wanted to go exploring, I ended up cooking all of eat and eating all of it but not at once, I explored all the buildings in Mystery Lake, and have moved on to Pleasant Valley. As soon as I got out of the cave and walked down hill I ran into a bear that attacked me lol. I'm now safely gathering myself in a little town i've never been before, chillin inside the community hall.

once you get to cooking level 5, you no longer get food poisoning or parasites from cooked meat. The goal is to hunt and cook like crazy and then let all your meat sit outside your base and outposts. Once you get lvl 5, its easy mode because you'll already have tons of food everywhere that you can safely eat.

packaged food still can get you sick and non potable water will still give you dysentery though... I just found that out

Thanks, i'm at lvl 3 cooking atm. Don't want to use up all my resources getting cooking to lvl 5 super quick but that's a good strategy. I might chill in pleasant valley and hunt and cook everything then explore some more.

Yup sounds good. I got 129 hrs in this game a big goal in this play through 32 days atm is to figure out ammunition building and forge crafting because I haven't done either of them because I never have the right materials when I get to their locations.
