As far as the Tales From The Far territories DLC- it is Survival mode Only, and does not affect Wintermute Story Mode at all.
It does have 2 optional "Tales" so far (one more expected when it is content complete). The Tales are set up in a similar manner to the quests in Wintermute, but they are optional, do have a reward which may or may not be useful or appreciated, some "fill-in" history of the island and game-lore is given that will fill in some details for people who have played Wintermute, and will give some back-story for players who only play Survival mode. No NPCs to interact with, and the new regions are really brutal- much more challenging than any of the regions in Wintermute Story Mode- with a bunch of new dangers and *permadeath* (no ability to respawn if you goof up, unless you know how to create manual saves and put them somewhere that Steam can't access your manual save).
Again- the TFTFT new regions and content are much more challenging than anything in Wintermute, even in Hardened Survivor Mode. You may want to try playing Survival Mode first, before buying the TFTFT DLC, to see if you enjoy Survival Mode or not- not everyone does. (Contrary to "popular belief" on these forums- there are people who enjoy Wintermute more). Follow the game using the Follow button on the store page- when the December Dev Diary comes out, it will show up in your activity feed for you to read and see what Raph has to tease with the new concept art and story teaser.
