It can stalk you for pretty long, they usually have a territoty and will follow you if you are in the same area where they detected you.
If they lose sight of you because of a hill, they may lose interest.
If you want them to actively flee, make a fire or light a torch/flare and use a rock or any weapon to aim at them when near the fire.
Just had a wolf do this to me in the HRV valley. It stalked me at the west end, and I just casually walked away from it eastward across the whole valley. Before I got to the end I rounded a boulder and it turned around and walked back.
Don't look at it though, TLd predators have a weird way of turning towards you to stalk if you glance in their general direction...

I think wind might slow down wolves, but definitely less than it slows down us.
Relax if he follows you, just go on about your busyness. Scare him off if he is on your way.
