Beachcombing: What have you found? [INTERLOPER]
Beachcoming, where you check the icy coastline for washed up items, is one of my favourite mechanics in The Long Dark. It's a nice solution to get around the otherwise finite nature of many items, but it got a revamp recently where items now change after every blizzard.

I'm interested to hear what fellow Interloper players have found from Neptune's bounty. Before the update, it was a rather narrow and benign selection, mostly just useful for cloth, metal and the occasional fish, but now, from what I've found so far, it's a huge variety of goods, including rare and valuable ones.

So far, I have found:
The usual fuel sources: sticks, reclaimed wood, firewood
Cloth
Scrap metal
Both saplings
Corpses of Rabbits, Wolves and Deer (no Bears or Moose so far)
Cured Rabbit Pelts
Leather
Both Saltwater fish
Both Toques (low condition, but not always ruined!)
Flares (meaning that there is now always a source of fire, even if you use all matches and lose all magnifying lenses)
Ketchup chips, Beef Jerky and Sardines (no sign of tinners)
Parkas
Flight Jacket (an amazing find for Interloper)
Boots and Socks
Cat tail stalks and seeds
Birch Bark
Painkillers
Pallets and planks which can be broken for reclaimed wood
Old Man Beard Lichen
Quality Tools (haven't found regular so far)
Spray Paint.

That's quite the haul, and I'm sure there are more to find. This update has made beachcombing incredibly strong and made Bleak Inlet a far more attractive place to camp up. Have you found any items not listed above on Interloper?

EDIT: Also reported in the thread as items found on Interloper Beachcombing:
Wood Matches (in washed up containers)
Flare Gun (In washed up Tug Boat (Can anyone confirm Flare Shells?)

Beach-combing has never been my thing. But I gave it a shot today since we're locked out of
Tales for now...

I did find one thing not on your list: Flare gun. It was in the cabin of a tugboat that washed up in CH.

Besides that I'll add that I was surprised at how many fish I found. Big ones. Even found a couple of large Bass on that same tugboat. Doesn't do me much good now as I'm on day 250, but this food source would be extremely valuable in an early loper run if everything stays the same...

Did you find the flare gun on loper? I know it can spawn there on Stalker, but after searching dozens of tugboats on loper (I've been doing a lot of beachcombing testing lately), I have not seen a single flare gun spawn. I have given up on it, but if you found it on loper I'm gonna keep trying.

I managed to find matches in a container (I think it was the backpack, not sure) after a blizzard, so it's not just (marine) flares that are renewable now. And a lot of clothing. I think the trunks can contain almost any coat in the game (limited to loper coats on loper of course).

Interestingly, there seem to be items that do not spawn after blizzards, only the old way, but with interloper blizzard frequency those items might not have a chance to spawn much. I have not seen that much scrap metal in particular, manwhile I found several sets of quality tools.. I might have to resort to scrapping them for spare metal as I have way too many sets now.

If the flare gun can be obtained via beachcombing in interloper, then I wonder if flare shells also spawn? If so, that's a big change considering its the closest thing to a firearm that currently exists in interloper.

Yes, found it on Loper. I had to open the door to the tugboat and walk inside to find it. I only covered DP and CH today so it was one out of, let's say, 30 items I came across.

Yes, but all empty Schroedinger containers must be verified to be empty so as to keep the quantum fluxes stabilized.

Yes I concur with massive amounts of fish. Found 2,000+ calories of fish on my first walkover in desolation point. I'm around day 200 now and honestly just started beachcombing at all really, but particularly after the update I wanted to head towards DP. So far I am very happy with the new change and it'll definitely improve DP as I like to head there late game for the forge.

On another note, I almost died (down to 24% condition and about 15% away from hypothermia) in a blizzard in coastal highway yesterday. Hubris was high as I thought "I can make my way to jackrabbit in the blizzard I've walked that route many times". (I was totally out of water and too stingy to use a match to make more, so I was heading for the toilet up there where I had 1/2 liter left). Nope LOL, got lost on the ice, I had unfortunately left all but around 8 sticks and 2 torches in bases. Luckily I found a fishing hut and (ironically) wasted a match to literally stay alive (I was nearly at hypothermia having been wandering around and freezing)... drank about 6 drinks (coffee, tea etc). to stay as warm as possible. When my fire ran out, I blindly man into the blizzard again (it was getting dark now and I was thinking to use a stim if I developed hypothermia) and hoped for a navigational beacon in the snow: found the log sort and made my way to the trailer there. Lesson learned, stop being so careless, or thinking I'm too strong. :)

Spray paint, quality tools, pallets and planks, flight jacket, parkas, kettle chips, beef jerky, flares, cured pelts, carcasses are new.

The biggest thing I have found is a box of wood matches inside of a containers, on loper, basically making that matches are also renewable.

And yes to above, massive amount of fish makes it that beachcombing is almost always positive calories as well as massive amount of lantern oil.

I started a beach comber character for this purpose. Introducing: Hanna Highway

Start location: Coastal Highway
Real name: Hanako Tachibana-Wilson
Favorite saying: "It's my way, or the highway"
Initial survival plan: Follow the highway to reach civilization

"Highway" has some vague knowledge about the geography of Great Bear, thanks to her urban explorer friends who have showcased some easily accessible locations on the island. Hana became a semi-professional cosplayer after being laid off from her non-essential social media manager gig during the pandemic. She started collaborating with her content creator friends as an "urbex honey" in their videos. That's totally a thing, trust me.

Btw, people kept mishearing her name as "Hanna", so it caught on. It's not like I invented this whole backstory after naming the savefile on a whim?? They went through several nicknames before settling on Hanna Highway, such as Road Rash, Cadillac Kitty, and many more names using the word Dumptruck or some variation of it.

Anyway, now this spunky spelunker finds herself in a quite the pickle. Her much anticipated video shoot in the Cinder Hills mine was canceled when a blizzard hit. Long story short, Hana was separated from the crew, and now her phone is dead.

Pretty sure the other kids drowned trying to cross the ice. Well, Hana is 31, but her patrons don't know it. You might think I'm setting her up as the Yoko of the group; but the crew actually went viral when highway debuted in their Haunted Halfway House video.

Hana lost her backpack, but managed to crawl to safety. Delirious, she kept running up and down the road for 3 hours, shouting into the wind...

Wait, what was the question?

I certainly didn't expect this, but add Skillbooks to the list of things that wash up now. I just found a copy of Frozen Angler on Desolation Point beachcombing.

When they announced "enhanced beachcombing" I was expecting something along the lines of functionality improvement, such as a different way to obtain washed up loot that didn't involve a naked mad dash. I never expected to be able to find new items like matches, carcasses, and even full lockers! I had to double check the OP to make verify that this was tested on Loper. Wow. :winter2019surprisedsnowman:

With all of these enhancements to available loot from this update as well as recent ones, we need a new game mode that brings that Loper feel back... I dunno call it "Masochist" or "Sufferer" or something :steamhappy:

Or just break BRA up into specific sliders so we can go back to Custom without being forced to use BRA=medium to access new functionality while being inundated with extra loot everywhere.
I don't necessarily agree about adding yet another game mode, but I do agree that HL may have gotten a little carried away with the available loot from beachcombing. It was already a very powerful mechanic before, and the reason why I consider Jackrabbit's the best base in the game for the long haul. But with the new loot like flares, flare guns, matches and skill books it's on a whole new level. Rather than add another game mode, I think that the existing interloper should be further tuned to limit what's available. As much as it'd be exciting to find high value items like flares and matches, it reduces the value of the mag lens and makes the mode a little too easy for my taste.

I think Hinter ran out of time for their Mar 30th launch and just released the same beach-combing loot across all difficulties. I also suspect this is why Tales was not added to Loper, NOT because they felt 'the constraint that makes that experience enjoyable works against the goals of the Tale'. They simply ran out of time to balance for all difficulty levels.

That's my theory anyway...

Oh, the irony. I'm not sure what their vision for Loper is anymore.
I wish that they would tell us.

I do like the new beach combing mechanic but it is OP for interloper and refreshes too often IMHO.

With daily blizzards, good afternoon weather in Coastal Highway (and my double bear coat setup) I've been able to spend most afternoons strolling up and down the coast picking up items.

I am hoping for the new clothing items before they nerf this feature, but so far the best I've got was an 83% Ski jacket.

I finally saw the tugboat but unfortunately it didn't have any flare items, only fish, sardines and ragged mittens.
GiovanniLeSheek Apr 8, 2023 @ 8:55am
Yeah.. this new beachcombing is so OP. Walking up and down coast in DP after a blizzard has been like Christmas. Honestly I hope that they don't nerf it because it's a breath of fresh air this run, much like the accidental revolver. I found an ice-fishing book as well. No really special loot yet, but lots of the fundamentals.

Today I found Pork n Beans inside a washed up locker, so Tinners are available in beachcombing. What I'd like to know is if tea or coffee ingredients are available.
