I have actually caught one of the new fish at the fishing hut.
It's was the Goldeye, caught from Pensive Pond.
This was near the Long Curve. The last turn in the river as it then heads towards Keeper's Pass South. I noticed the ice had a more blue tint so thought what the heck. What? This works?!? I did check along the river towards the transition to Keeper's Pass South and the suitable ice did not go far.
The Long Curve is near the far west side of the map, right? Where the road ends on that side of the map?
much appreciated - but for me just almost the same as hoofing over to the only fishing hut in the map, so kinda pointless. if they was going to make it so difficult why not just add another fishing hut to the map?
Still unclear how to know what ice to check and what to not bother with however- it looked largely the same as the rest of the river.
The first suitable ice I found was in Keeper's Pass South and it was where the existing ice fishing hut was located and it was fairly sizable. An obvious place to check and scout around. I was initially trying around the break in the ice downstream from the ice fishing hut but nope.
I am not trying too hard or have a lot of hope set on being able to fish anywhere without having an ice fishing hut present. I have time so I would suppose I would be checking here and there for suitable ice. A better indicator (i.e., amount of blue in the ice) might help in that.
ETA: I found another New Fishing location (as I call the "make your own ice fishing hole" mechanic) on the river downstream from Thomson's Crossing. It is located where another river joins up with it. It seems to have reasonably coverage of that river junction. There can be wolves and rabbits in the area.
Although there would be no man-made shelters in the vicinity, going further downstream would get you to a cave in the right side riverside cliff. I think there was a leaf bed inside the cave. If nothing else, a suitable pile of wood would make the cave habitable.
Some pounds allow make the fishing hole, in the HL trailer you can see various holes in a small pound.
