Failed repair consumes materials?

I was trying to repair a wolfskin coat, having both a cured wolf pelt and the cured gut. After failed repair, both repairing materials disappeared. Is this a bug or is the right mechanics?

I was under the impression that only the guts should disappear, or maybe I never had failed coat repairs before...

Yes it consumes them.I quite often deplete my cloth failing to repair one damn pair of socks.

Yes failed repairs always consume all materials.
If your materials are hard to come by, you can always save scum: enter a location to save, try to repair and exit your game to retry if it fails.

This is why I am such a pack rat, I always carry cured leather with me to the next region when I "migrate" and I always kill animals that have the hides I need, even though I do not need the meat. Just to give it time to cure, in case of I need repairs.

This is why the mending skill book (and also the fishing skill book), I'll actually take the time to read, if I can find them. Even if you can just get that first level, it makes a big difference in the number of failed repairs and snapped lines you'll have to deal with. Good way to pass a blizzard.

I recommend not bothering with repairing crap stuff, instead search for repair books and the best cloth gear. Start crafting gear as soon as possible, that way you'll have plenty of material to repair what counts. Crafted gear is renewable, usually lighter too, so it's good to have a couple sets based on what you're doing.

In the pilgrim level you can increase your skill level by reading two different books of the same title. I don't know if this works for all difficulty levels or by reading a third book of the same title.
