I wont go into detail to avoid spoliers.

You will survive not nearly as long as you can by harvesting animals. You don't just kill animals for food, you need their pelts and guts to craft clothes and other items. But a vegan run would be an interesting challange. There is non-meat based commercial food to be found like soup, peaches, energy bars, etc. There is one plant you can eat. The other plants in the game are for medical uses.

To a point, eventually you'll have eaten all the pre spawned food in tins etc and eaten all the cattails then you will be in trouble.

If by vegan play you eat no meat either then you won't be able to harvest the already dead deer you sometimes find, or the fish or other 'wild' food you sometimes find in fridges or by the water.

Disregarding all that, if you are attacked by a wolf and fight it off you will more than likely cause it a mortal wound resulting in eventual death. I think if you don't fight back vs a wolf it will run off possibly but you'll suffer a load more damage and possibly die. You can avoid wolves to a point but eventually you'll probably get cornered and attacked by one.

Perhaps a "minimal damages" gameplay is worth a try, then. I wonder to what extent stealth can be used in The Long Dark.

There is an achievement, if you have looked at them you may see it, called pacifist which requires not killing anything for 25 days. Though 25 days is a short period in the overall scheme of things.

I wouldn't say there's a stealth system. But there are ways to avoid animals sight etc.

It probably already is gluten free, and lactose free too.

Hey, you wanna know how to tell if someone is vegan or not?
don't worry, they will tell you about 30 seconds after meeting you

Vegan would mean no egg and no milk products either.
Veganism does not mean you cannot kill an animal in self defense, simply one that does not eat or make use of animal products.
Tomato soup, saltine or stoned wheat thin style crackers, peaches, pop, cattails
Some granola and energy bars would be OK, others use Whey in various forms (milk product), but we'll assume they're fine.
It's not much.

EDIT: I expect most vegans would let their morals slip a little in a live or die situation.

Am I the only one finding the question about meat free surviving in catastrophic event a bit ... unjustified?

Even if you were vegetarian in normal life, you'd probably forget your oaths after several days of unsatisfied hunger.

I was about to say the same, however i think it was just a question.... IF it is possible in the game.

Obviously, if u are in a situation like in TLD you have literally no other options to eat meat and thus killing animals.

I am intrigued with this question.

One of the origional premises of this game was 'how far would you go to survive'? We haven't seen any real moral quandries in game yet, but we probably will in Story Mode.

Still, it's fair question for a player to pose him/herself in the sandbox too, if only for the fun of it. For those of us who are not vegan or vegitarian, it may seem like an easy moral decision to cast aside.....a luxury you can only afford because you live in a place with such a wide selection of food options that you can toss aside meat without too much trouble. Are our morals so fragile that the premise of physical survival trumps everything else without batting an eye? Are we all just waiting for an apocalypse so we can final shed all these burdensome 'values' and get on with the business of doing whatever we want?

But in this game you would come face to face with the consequences of what you feel is 'the right thing to do'. The vegetable matter in this game, along with the soda, crackers, tomato soup, and granola is absolutely finite....even if you assume for the sake of argument that the ingredients list is compatable with your choices, you are going to run out really soon and they will never respawn. Can you survive? Of course.....it won't be very long probably compared to what you can do using meat. How long would it be? Could you hold to your morals in the face of starvation?

I find the morality implications of this game to be facinating. I have made a number of suggestions to the Devs around moral issues and how they might engage with the game mechanics......everything from the implications of book burning to looting corpses to possible cannibalism. I can't wait to see what, if anything, the devs do with that aspect either in story mode or future sandbox updates.
