Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
So my character doesn't have any afflictions, and even after 9 hours of rest, she is so exhausted after 3 hours awake that she can't run and she becomes encumbered. Now something definitely has to be wrong here. I'm having to sleep day and night and it's not helping. The exhaustion meter is fully white when I start out, and then becomes severely exhausted and needs to sleep after harvesting for 1.5 hours.

Am I missing something here? Survival is starting to seem impossible.

Are you certain you are selecting Rest and not simply Passing Time?
Captain Dan Jul 29, 2016 @ 1:46pm
Are you running everywhere with too much weight?
athikers Jul 29, 2016 @ 1:48pm
If your fatigue meter is fully white when you finish resting then you are resting and not passing time. How much weight are you carrying and also are you running everywhere? Excess weight and running will tire you pronto.

Yes I'm definitely resting. I have divested myself of most of my weight so I can travel from one shelter to the next. I do run until my fatigue bottoms out, but if that is enough to take me from fully rested to completely exhausted, in under 3 hours, there is something seriously wrong with this game! I'm talking about leaving the Carter dam and going to that area with the lifeguard tower-looking edifice in the clearing, with all the elk and rabbits, halfway between Carter and Mystery lake.

I ran there until I had to walk, then finished walking the rest of the way, and then harvested the elk I left there. That took 1.5 hours and by the time I was done I was completely exhausted and there was still 10 hours of daylight left!

This can't be normal, can it? I can't survive. I can't find time to craft, repair clothing, cook, boil water, or read, let alone hunt and fish. This is depressing :(

If you sprint yourself to exhaustion deliberately, yes, you will find that fatigue sets in pretty quickly. It is a resource to be used in a measured and balanced way and is working as intended. It is not designed for you to be able to sprint continuously without seeing a trade-off. I hope that helps!

I must not have been clear enough. I left the Carter dam and ran until my fatigue meter ran out, not the exhaustion meter. Once I had to walk, I walked the rest of the way. So I only ran until I reached the end of the bridge, which was about where I was when it forced me to walk. So like I said, if that caused me to go from completely rested to completely exhausted- this game is not balanced at all.

And I'd love to know how people get from one shelter to the next without running. If I start out from the Mystery Lake lodge, and get to the Trapper's Cabin, by way of the crashed tunnel train, I'm almost dead from hypothermia with running as much as possible. I'm lucky to get there on half health.

I must be missing something.

Fatigue meter = Exhaustion meter. It's one and the same. If you sprint everywhere, you get tired. Once the red eye symbol comes up, you are exhausted and need to rest (sleep) or lose condition quickly. It is working as intended., as Hinterland explained.

Most people don't sprint at all from what I have seen in the forums and in Let Play videos. Only when absolutely neccessary. I only sprint to get the heck away from danger, like a wolf chasing me back to a building I can get into and close the door on them.

IRL, I used to do alot of backpacking in the Desert SW of the USA. Heat takes it out of you like cold does in this game. We never sprinted from camp to camp. We walked, saved energy and kept our ability to travel and not become so exhausted we could not go further from dropping off as fast as if we had run. Walking burns less calories, especially with a heavy pack on. Even one not packed to it's limit. I also used to be a volunteer firefighter. And the weight of my gear (about half my body weight, similar to the pack in this game), would have me panting heavily if I had to run across a yard to lay the first hoseline. We only ran in full gear if we had to for that reason. Whether it was freezing cold in winter or oppressively hot in summer.

You are burning calories by sprinting, and dehydrating yourself by doing so. So you get tired, hungry and thirsty faster. Stop sprinting everywhere. And do repairs and crafting when you are stuck inside during a blizzard or windstorm.

This is exaclty normal, like the dev answered. If you run until your fatigue drops you tire yourself.

Here is a tip for you, press wqthever key it is to show you your four meters "hunger, thirst, fatigue, warmth" you will see that fatigue drops at the rate of one arrow when still, 2 arrows when walking, and 3 arrows when running. So yes, you will get tired super fast. Stop running for no reason, run when a wolf is after you or a blizzard sets in for exemple.

In the game, it's a sacrifice to get to new places. If you want to get somewhere, you should be quick, but running isn't a good idea. Running is what I use for emergencies. It's not for travel. The more you run, the more tired you get after time. It's probably a better idea to walk places, and sacrifice a bit of condition for new gear and clothes.
athikers Jul 29, 2016 @ 3:56pm
Sound as if OP doesn't have good clothing yet. Have been in similar situations when I had to run from place to place to avoid hypothermia. The games has a pretty steep learning curve. Food, shelter, heat. Improved your clothing and keep it in top repair. It's a constant juggling match to stay on top but that is the basis of survival. Hope you hang in there. It is a bit frustrating but we all made it. If you need help, just ask. If it appears that we are laughing it's because we made the same mistakes.

Yes it could be my clothing is bad. I haven't been able to make repairs, or investigate much. I thought that you would have to run quite a bit to exhaust yourself. It really seems strange that running about 40 meters makes you go from fully rested to fully exhausted though. I can't get my head around that.

I'll stop running at all, but that really makes it difficult when you're freezing to death! Lol

Save your sprint for blizzards, wolves, or when you know you'll be close to a bed soon.
DeepFried Jul 29, 2016 @ 5:56pm
Yeah basically running is an emergency only thing, don't do it as a matter of course. Just to avoid wolves or escape hypothermia. Also, with regard hypothermia walking places, you need to repair your clothes, then you need to replace them with crafted fur clothes asap. Try to organise your day, so if you're planning on travelling or hunting, don't spend time havesting/repairing/crafting or whatever, as that will tire you out. The mechanics are a bit wonky at the moment in terms of balance, but it is still alpha.

If you need to justify it, you could tell yourself that time passes more quickly in the game than it does in real life. In the game a minute of you playing is something like 15 minutes of "In the world" time for your character. By that metric, that 40 meters of icy snowy ground you're running over is more like 600 meters (about 2/3 of a kilometer).

It also helps make sense of the relatively short distances between locations or the small size of communities.
