You will find three kinds of beautifully crafted maps for most of the game here:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=530202531
There are basic (minimal spoilers) maps that give you a sense of the terrain and indicate some big picture things. There are intermediate maps that indicate almost everything except loot. And, there are maps that show almost everything.
Some people like them, some people love them, and some people neither love nor hate them. (If you don't want to use them, you don't have to use them. Doh.)
They are made by the amazing Danish cartographer, Whiteberry. A profile here:

I was lost until I found Whiteberry's maps.
If you get lost (and believe me you'll get lost even with a map) always try to find and follow roads, riverbeds and powerlines. In Pleasant Valley you always have to Radio Tower for reference.
It's not a reference when there's a blizzard out! But, KoA is right, learn those riverbeds - easiest way to get around in PV (you're low, so you can usually hug one side and get out of the wind, generally not very wolfy, you gotta collect the cat tails anyway).
Always check your weather as well...see if the sky is getting too dark, the wind too strong, those are usually signs a blizzard is coming. If you hop from one safe place to the next, you'll probably never get caught out in the open...probably lol.
If I know I'm going to be moving very slowly, like if I'm hauling 50kg of junk from one safehouse to the next, I always carry 10 sticks and 3 cloth as blizzard protection. If a blizzard pops up, take off the clothes, build a snow shelter, get in, get dressed, and wait it out.
This will probably all change once the frostbite thing comes out. But for now it works.
I am, however, not insane like my fellow wolf hunter ajb1978. I will leave my clothes on, thank you very much. I'll hunt for hide and repair if need be. I think his character must feel more confident without clothes, it's too bad we can't paint ourselves blue and run around like half-mad Scotsmen ingame.
The funny thing is in an earlier post I was talking about the time I charged out of Quonset buck naked, carrying a knife, and killed an entire wolf pack in melee with berzerker fury lol
"ACH! C'mere ye little doggy! I'll caber toss ya from here to Glasgow!"
Lol I think I was there for that. It's part of the reason why I mentioned it..in fact now that I think of it most of your stories end like this: "...then I got naked and killed a bunch of wolves with a knife." Hahaha
I personally beeline to the farm house. It's smack in the middle of the map, and makes a great home base. Plus you can drop into the rivers easily and use them as roads, which helps traverse to other locations while avoiding both wind and the local wildlife.
