Killing bears with flare gun
I tried to kill a bear in CH with a flaregun.(near the blue trailer). I was crouched and he walked right up to me so I fired and he just ran off (no blood), I followed him again and he went into his bear cave so I crounched and went up to him and he turned and walked towardsd me so I fired again but he just growled and ran off.
I also tried to kill a bear the same way near the bear camp site (I think that's the name) in CH and when I fired he ran off and left a blood trail, I couldn't find him even after 2 days and have never found him.

On another playthrough I killed the bear near the trailer by doing exactly as above and he died on the spot.

You can easily kill a ber with the flare gun
just stick the flare to his head, and he is going to bleed out fast

I was so close to him, face to face that should have been close enough. The one I actually killed I was not as close to him and he died on the spo.

Ah the joy of the RNG. Sometimes they drop like a stone, sometimes not (usually), For a nice light show, shoot the bear near the mountaineers hut on TWM at dusk. If you don't get an instant kill and the flare sticks you will be treated to a great light show.

Yes, while we generally wouldn't recommend using the Distress Pistol strictly as a hunting tool, it is possible to kill off a bear with one. Risky though!

Risk!?! What risk?
The bear runs away at the sound of the shot granting you 100% protection when you pull the trigger. Same cannot be said for the other ranged weapons...

Miss the bear and see what happens. Got mauled twice because I am a p### poor shot with the flare gun.

Your experience is far different from mine.
For me, the shot immediately sends the bear running away. (For this reason most single shots to a bear result in a hit to the hindquarters.)
Then if the flare lands beyond the bear, it can scare it again into turning right back. But it is fleeing, not charging, and will pass right through my body without incident.

Enjoy:

I meant it more in the sense that the Distress Pistol rounds are so scarce, that to *actively* use them as a hunting tool (instead of the more abundant Rifle ammo or bow and arrow) might be a tough trade off. But to each his own!

You can kill a bear with a flare gun?! *mind blown, as though by direct hit from flare gun*

I have done this precisely once, by accident. I have not attempted it on purpose!

Although that would be a beautifully ironic way to win "The Hunted: Part One".

That would be nice :) I just re-did the Hunted tho, time 1d12h7m and stuck three flares on the bear, one in DP and two in ML. Walked right by Fluffy too with no agro unless you hang around, so they changed the code for the challenge _ the flare-kill does not work in 'The Hunted'.
