just stick the flare to his head, and he is going to bleed out fast
Yes, while we generally wouldn't recommend using the Distress Pistol strictly as a hunting tool, it is possible to kill off a bear with one. Risky though!
The bear runs away at the sound of the shot granting you 100% protection when you pull the trigger. Same cannot be said for the other ranged weapons...
For me, the shot immediately sends the bear running away. (For this reason most single shots to a bear result in a hit to the hindquarters.)
Then if the flare lands beyond the bear, it can scare it again into turning right back. But it is fleeing, not charging, and will pass right through my body without incident.
Enjoy:

I meant it more in the sense that the Distress Pistol rounds are so scarce, that to *actively* use them as a hunting tool (instead of the more abundant Rifle ammo or bow and arrow) might be a tough trade off. But to each his own!
Although that would be a beautifully ironic way to win "The Hunted: Part One".
That would be nice :) I just re-did the Hunted tho, time 1d12h7m and stuck three flares on the bear, one in DP and two in ML. Walked right by Fluffy too with no agro unless you hang around, so they changed the code for the challenge _ the flare-kill does not work in 'The Hunted'.
