do bears always maul you in your sleep?
so recently I went out of the riken and up a near by rock ledge to look for deer but there was some fog so I just said screw it and put down a bed roll and slept for 1 hour, but not even a few minutes into sleep do I find a bear mauling me

this suposed to be common cause if so I guess im not sleeping on high rock ledges anymore

Yeah, there is a chance that if you sleep outside, a bear or a wolf mauls you.

How big is that chance? Any conditions that factor into the percentage? Can you prevent it?

I'd say if they are known to roam the area I wouldn't chance it.

well a wolfskin coat will not save you from a bear but maybe a bear skin bed roll but if you dont have either of those maybe just get a fire set up in a place were it will not burn out from wind
(honestly I have no idea im just making wild guesses)

I really try to avoid sleeping in the open for exactly that reason. I slept in one of the ice fishing huts with a door on it in CH once on Stalker and when I woke up to drink and everything, there was bear right outside the door. Scared the hell out of me but thankfully their AI isn't sophisticated enough to break down flimsy wooden doors. Yet.

So yeah, if you decide to sleep in a fishing hut make damn well sure it has a door!

wrapped up in ya sleeping bag, you will look and taste like a human sausage roll, wondering wildlife would lick their lips in anticipation Mmmmm yummy!!

Just for your own info Azure....bears and wolves can't attack you in any fishing hut. Its one of the remaining exploits in the game. Lure bear or wolf close and then fire at will from the safety of the hut. You have to be IN the hut, not one foot out the door.

To the original poster...if you sleep outside you are susceptible to attack....enough said.

A bear has mauled me several times in a bedroll outside.

I have hear of the bear-skin bedroll preventing wolf attacks. Just don't risk it. I've almost lost runs to these kind of things. The stupid mistakes always end your runs.

It depends of the zone... 100% sure about this...
i been sleeping outside on places without animals and there is no problem...
Also, fishing huts can prevent the attacks, but i read some guys that where killed anyways.
Idk about bearskin bedroll scaring bears... but wolfskin coat does, but idk if works when you sleep... i need oficial info about it, and maybe tests.

Maybe they smelled the fish y'all caught and decided you had extra seasoning due o the fish you caught
