Forlorn Muskeg
So after traveling to Forlorn Muskeg from Mystery Lake I got a really weird thought; what does "Forlorn Muskeg" mean? I googled it and it turns out that Forlorn means sad, depressing, gloomy, forgotten, abandoned. the definition google gave me was "pitifully sad and abandoned or lonely".
Now, what does "Muskeg" mean? I looked it up and the definition google gave me was "a North American swamp or bog consisting of a mixture of water and partly dead vegetation, frequently covered by a layer of sphagnum or other mosses."

So basically what Forlorn Muskeg means is a forgotten, sad, wasteland. Did anyone else know this? And somehow, Forlorn Muskeg is one of my favorite regions. :)

I did not know - I like it - it is beautiful but I prefer to travel and not to stay there for long :)

Want to know something odd? I've only gotten four frostbites ever playing this game. All four of them have been in Forlorn Muskeg. xD For some reason when I go walking out on the ice exploring I never ever remember to take off my shoes and socks after getting them wet. They freeze while I'm asleep and then I see "AFFLICTION: FROSTBITE RISK" and then "AFFLICTION: FROSTBITE:" and then I think "dangit". xD (just not as kid-friendly ;)

: ) if you are wearing animal made boots they do not get wet so fast :)

That's what I'm working on right now. I have one deer skin already and just killed another one to let it cure. hopefully I'll have time to make them before I start mapping the region so they don't get so wet.

I knew it. Just because I had to translate all the areas' names into my native language :P

*Pleasant* Valley. <snicker>

If by Pleasant, you mean the most forsaken $#%^&*hole, then yes.

I remember when FM was a new region, and I always thought the name was the most unique region name in TLD. Most of the other region names are a simple geographic or structural description preceded by a simple adjective.. Pleasant Valley, Coastal Highway, Mystery Lake, etc. This one was much more unique and evokes mood in a way the others don't, in my opinion.

I agree. I didn't have any clue what it meant at the time, but I liked it. :)

Actually, I think Forlorn Muskeg is nearing two years, right? IIRC FM was added in an update called "Resolute Outfitter" (correct me if I'm wrong) which also introduced the current clothing system we have. I remember having so much fun exploring a new region because that was the first region added for me after buying the game. I "remember" when there was only one region, Mystery Lake. but I didn't have the game at that time. I followed the game for a couple years and eventually bought it. xD

My main base is Mystery Lake and had to go into Forlorn Muskeg and go to the Old Spence Homestead to forge some tools for the achievement and it's not a very hospitable place compared to the other zones, lack of enclosed shelter, thin ice in alot of places and it seemed to me alot of blizzards popped up (but maybe thats just my imagination).

Ran across the word muskeg in a book long before playing TLD (don't know why I was reading about different kind of swamps, think it was work related), but after seeing FM, the name makes perfect sense to me!

Based on where I grew up (Southern California) and where I live now I had no idea what a Muskeg was so I looked it up as soon as that region was released. Forlorn I knew thanks to public schools.

While the region certainly can chew you up and spit you out I don't really feel forlorn when I go there. In fact it's one of my favorite maps in the game. I love the wildness of it and the necessity to establish several camps if you want to stay for very long. Really nice design and unique mechanics make it a winner in my book.

I would rather live in a "sad marsh land" (Forlon Muskeg) than an "Unpleasant Valley" (Pleasant Valley).

I quite like FM too, it's like a big basin with the middle so flat you can see for miles - that is when it's not foggy, . The terrain isn't any bother either when you know where to walk. If I hear the ice crack and see the 'weak ice' warning I just retrace my steps backwards where I know it's safe. I spend quite a bit of time there - it's only a step from BR and Milton Basin and the forge is much easier to get to than DP's. :steamhappy:

I like that about it too, down in the valley area you can see for a long ways making it easy to spot wolves, bears, deer, moose, etc.

I disagree. I like Pleasnt valley for a number of reasons.

It's big and has a lot of wildlife. It has very good shelters and there's a fishing hut a small hike away to fight off cabin fever. There's also little barns throughout the region that you can fight cabin fever or just stay the night in. The only thing I don't like about it is that you get a blizzard 5/10 days or so. (from my experience anyhow) The mornings are a little chilly, but I can tolorate them.

@ Jiffy - yes PV has things going for it. The only thing I have time for in PV is the abandoned prepper cache by the rope climb to TWM. FM is all about lines of sight which is what you have mentioned.

BTW - good to see you around, I've had some good topic exchanges with you over on Stranded Deep in the past.

I thought I recoognized the name from somewhere, but couldn't quite remember where. Nice to see you around too. :)
