Similar games?
Hi, long dark community. I’m really loving this game, and am looking for recs for similar games. I play only on interloper sandbox and find the challenge extremely rewarding (at times).

Specifically, I am looking for:

1. Survival genre
2. Very challenging but fair. I love the challenge of surviving the first few nights on interloper. Failing so frequently only adds to the enjoyment and thrill of success, when it comes.
3. Player vs nature only. No zombies, cannibals, etc etc.
4. Limited base building. I don’t want to be able to build some impregnable fortress.

I have tried the majority of the popular ones that the steam filter hits upon. I tinkered very briefly with the Forest but quit (zombies). Never tried Green Hell. Liked Don’t Starve, sorta, but too much base building and too cartoony.

Any thoughts? Hopefully there’s some indie game out there that I’ve missed. Much appreciated.

(Perhaps the only thing I’d change about Long Dark is more plant and animal diversity and some sort of trainable nature skill which would allow for more insight re: weather predictions, additional edible plants, understanding predator behaviors, etc.)

There is nothing like TLD that I can think off hand, There are a small few dayz servers that run Survival mods and are considered HC that come sorta close/ Except your still always stuck on the same map.

I honestly think TLD is the best "pure" survival game out there.

I don't know of anything in the winter survival genre that is close to TLD. Northern Lights may be good someday, but it's stuck in Early Access for now.

For jungle survival I would say definitely try Green Hell, it's supposed to be very good. Maybe The Forest but I don't know if you can turn off the "enemies" or not.

Arid is a great little desert survival game.

I sort of bounced off Subnautica (underwater survival) but it is extremely popular so I suspect the problem is with me and not the game.

Ahh yeah I forgot about green hell. there is also that other game, when your on a raft and got to search islands. I cant remember name. but it is decent survival wise. not my cup of tea but I can see where many like those games. As far as TLD there is nothing truly in comparison.

For me, it is what other survival or future survival games should strive too.

Most "survival" games I know are more "chop down trees and build nice houses" than "survive against a harsh enviroment"
They should be called base builder or something, but not survival.
Somehow adding hunger to a game is enough to make it survival.

TLD is the only one i know that focuses on man vs nature instead of man vs beast or
man vs man.
There are some games that have one or two features that push them a little bit towards this path, but they still focus on base building and/or fighting creatures.

Another big difference is that none of the other games have permadeath.
The worst thing that can happen is that you lose your gear or load a previous save.

So tell me when you´ve found a similar game, i would love to know it

Thanks for all these comments. I think I will wishlist Green Hell and pick it up next sale.

It really seems to me that there could be an untapped market for these sorts of games, but I don't know how well Long Dark sold. Too many people prioritize eye candy over gameplay (though I do love TLD art style). I love the concept of being (virtually) plopped into some harsh and remote environment and battling nature (and only nature) to survive. TLD is great and that idea could work in so many other biomes as well (desert, jungle, remote island, high altitude, savannah, etc etc). Is Hinterland hard at work developing a new game or still working on TLD stuff?

Anyone tried Starsand? I am not necessarily opposed to early access games, depending upon just how early the version is.

Ylion, if I find anything, I will absolutely give you a shout. I agree 100% with everything you wrote.

You could check out a streamer called Atheenon on Twitch/Youtube He's mainly a TLD player but plays other survival games and demos/early access games etc.

If I´m not mistaken, they are about to release the last story episode soonish.
The devs did a poll a couple months ago, asking what players would like to see in the future.
They talked about possible Expansions and TLD2, but also smaller DLC´s like new regions and items. All in all pretty vague.
I have no idea about the outcome, but there were ideas like different seasons or new locations altogether you could vote on.
So they do think in the right direction if you ask me.

Nice. Hadn't heard about this -- that should be interesting based on what a quick google search showed me.

One of these days I'll get around to playing Wintermute. 370 hours of playtime and I've never tried it, lol

green hell is the closest thing you can come to for a TLD experience.

I am playing Northern Lights for a while. Nothing is like TLD but NL is early access which means you can contribute to the development and direction of the game. The developers are very responsive and engaging with the community. I got it for $10 cdn so I can't complain and I am finding it quite entertaining to explore.

Yeah I mentioned that one previously, it seems like it absolutely has potential. I plan on coming back to it once it's made some more progress.
