Do you find Animalskincoats deter wolves?
As for Ski vs. Mackinaw, it's purely whether you're cool with .5kg extra weight for .5C
My playstyle I've come to accept shaving 1-2C and 1-2kg so I can stay lighter on my feet. No wool sox, jeans and deer pants (or combat pants but you have like ONE shot at finding them at Radio Hut in PV), Wolfcoat and Ski/Mackinaw.
To the OP
Voyager---wear craft whatever you want for learning if nothing else, but really you'll be fine exploring and getting the top tier man-made stuff. Sure Deer Boots are excellent, but why bother crafting them when you can keep it moving and find Muks or Insulated eventually. In the meantime your feet won't rot off from Trail, Work, or Combat Boots.
Stalker---Wolfcoat even if it does only occassionally frighten a wolf off. It's worth noting that I semi-frequently send a wolf off whimpering by smell even on Loper. The coat does work.
Loper---You just have to decide if you want to deal with the extra weight for the warmth.
One last note: A double bearcoat will keep you a little warmer at the expense of a lot of weight. But even with a wolfcoat and Ski vs. a double bearcoat, I'm NOT going to freeze to death while awake. Just not going to happen. But a bearroll will guarantee I don't die in my sleep in a cave even thru an early morning blizzard, so that's what i devote my bear resources to.
But in a good way.
100% agreed. Unless it's interloper though, because even with the highest quality manufactured clothes, you wouldn't stand much of a chance outside all day.
YES on the wolf deterrent - very much so.
Wolfskin coats I do like, because they are warm, and fairly lightweight. But in Stalker I find it may scare off 1 out of 4-5 wolves, wolves that I am approaching myself, to scare off of a kill. Lone wolves. If one has run off from a pack that is tailing me or surrounding me, i have not noticied it. Too busy watching and trying to evade the other 4-6 wolves. Never noticed the wolfskin coat to work at keeping a wolf from tracking me... stalking me, as it is. If they lock on to stalk, the coat has never stopped them or made them break off stalking me, that I can recall.
So... they work, but not terribly reliably. I wouldn;t suggest wearing one and going strolling down the center of Milton, thinking you ar safe from being jumped by the numerous wolves that live there. Use the coat to keep warm and save on weigh if you don;t have an expedition parka handy. And don't get cocky and prnace around like wolves can't touch you, just because you are wearing a few of their relative's skins. It's not that good.
I've played making and wearing the wolfskin coat on Stalker and Voyager and each time there is a definite advantage to wearing it. More than half of the time the wolf runs up and then makes the same yipping sound like when you life a fire and they run away. It's supposed to be a random effect from the coat. Sometimes it scares them off but sometimes it doesn't.
(no trolling - this has been my experience)
