Opinion of bearskin and wolfskin coats
What is your thoughts on these coats? As far as warmth they are wonderful and I am a big fan of the wolfskin because it is warm and I can repair easily. Made the bearskin coat for the first time as soon as I step out of the Quonsett a wolf is upon me. I have had only 3 or 4 wolves run off scared and 25 who were not and wanted to tussle. Guess they did not get the memo to back off.Still love this game regardless!

I think the wolfskin coat is a good idea early into mid-game because it's better than most coats you find early game but when you find an Expadition parka, I usually switch to a Windbreaker and Exparka. Bearskin however I feel is very useless. It's very warm yes, but also nine pounds! You could wear a combination of other coats that comes to maybe just below the warmth of the bear. Now in interloper, I say the bearskin coat is worth it because in this gamemode, the best coat you can find I beieve is a mariner's pea coat. (I think that's what I heard? maybe the best was Military or Mackinaw)

I'm not sure if there's pea coats or mackinaws in 'loper, but I think I might recall one? IIRC Gray Still Plays (Youtuber) found a Mariner's pea coat at the PV farmstead? Not sure.

For me the bearskin is just too heavy for the benefit. Two wolf skins or a wolf skin and a ski jacket are sufficient in many cases in conjunction with a bear skin bed roll. The bearskin coat is 5kg and +6c, the bedroll is 3kg and +12c.

At +22C clothes a +11c (slightly used) bedroll and a snow shelter and I'm good for any weather above -40C. If it gets in the -40C to -60C range the +2C from the bearskin coat over wolf isn't going to help much.

I've been sporting a Moose Hide Cloak lately. When wearing it only weighs 6.60 lbs, offers 90% waterproof bonus, 25% protection, with only minus 10 movement. I have since stored my wolf skin coat. It degrades very slowly, but needs a moose hide skin to repair- which can be a huge downside if RNG is against you.
Do you find Animalskincoats deter wolves?

I've found two WOOT Mackinaws in my current Loper run, but it took Milton opening up for RNG to finally trigger the second finding. Mackinaw is the best man-made on Loper that I've ever seen.

As for Ski vs. Mackinaw, it's purely whether you're cool with .5kg extra weight for .5C

My playstyle I've come to accept shaving 1-2C and 1-2kg so I can stay lighter on my feet. No wool sox, jeans and deer pants (or combat pants but you have like ONE shot at finding them at Radio Hut in PV), Wolfcoat and Ski/Mackinaw.

To the OP
Voyager---wear craft whatever you want for learning if nothing else, but really you'll be fine exploring and getting the top tier man-made stuff. Sure Deer Boots are excellent, but why bother crafting them when you can keep it moving and find Muks or Insulated eventually. In the meantime your feet won't rot off from Trail, Work, or Combat Boots.

Stalker---Wolfcoat even if it does only occassionally frighten a wolf off. It's worth noting that I semi-frequently send a wolf off whimpering by smell even on Loper. The coat does work.

Loper---You just have to decide if you want to deal with the extra weight for the warmth.

One last note: A double bearcoat will keep you a little warmer at the expense of a lot of weight. But even with a wolfcoat and Ski vs. a double bearcoat, I'm NOT going to freeze to death while awake. Just not going to happen. But a bearroll will guarantee I don't die in my sleep in a cave even thru an early morning blizzard, so that's what i devote my bear resources to.

What does WOOT refer to?
jswilliams Feb 16, 2018 @ 2:56pm
Rrrrr, WOOT is like Doakes being next to you when you see a Mackinaw setting on a bed. He jumps out and goes, "SURPRISE ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ !!!!"

But in a good way.

100% agreed. Unless it's interloper though, because even with the highest quality manufactured clothes, you wouldn't stand much of a chance outside all day.

So you are saying yes that the wolfskin coat helps scare away wolves? What difficulty are you playing on and how can I do the same? O r am I being trolled?

Haven't bothered with the bearskin coat, only made it one time. So, I can't speak to how it works to deter wolves.

Wolfskin coats I do like, because they are warm, and fairly lightweight. But in Stalker I find it may scare off 1 out of 4-5 wolves, wolves that I am approaching myself, to scare off of a kill. Lone wolves. If one has run off from a pack that is tailing me or surrounding me, i have not noticied it. Too busy watching and trying to evade the other 4-6 wolves. Never noticed the wolfskin coat to work at keeping a wolf from tracking me... stalking me, as it is. If they lock on to stalk, the coat has never stopped them or made them break off stalking me, that I can recall.

So... they work, but not terribly reliably. I wouldn;t suggest wearing one and going strolling down the center of Milton, thinking you ar safe from being jumped by the numerous wolves that live there. Use the coat to keep warm and save on weigh if you don;t have an expedition parka handy. And don't get cocky and prnace around like wolves can't touch you, just because you are wearing a few of their relative's skins. It's not that good.

Strange, Because with the bearskin coat my idea was to make it and walk through The Crumbling Highway and onto DP the Riken unharmed. Lesson learned.

I've played making and wearing the wolfskin coat on Stalker and Voyager and each time there is a definite advantage to wearing it. More than half of the time the wolf runs up and then makes the same yipping sound like when you life a fire and they run away. It's supposed to be a random effect from the coat. Sometimes it scares them off but sometimes it doesn't.

(no trolling - this has been my experience)
