Clothing crafting question
How long does "in progress" take once you craft something from an already dried animal skin, like the deerskin boots or rabbit skin gloves?

Rabbit Mitts, Deer Pants, Deer Boots, Wolf Coat - when you pull up the crafting recipe at the workstation, take a good look at all the info - you should see what the total time requirement is. Further to the right, if you have all the materials you need, you'll also see a setting you can change, that defaults at putting in just 1/2 hr of work - you can adjust this to put in more time as you desire, just keep in mind that your water and food bar will begin dwindling the moment you start work and will probably need to be addressed at some point before you're completely done with any particular piece, except maybe the Rabbit Mitts.

I crafted the clothing from the dried skins just fine at the workbench. I was full with both water and food and it took the time it said it would take to craft everything. What I don't understand is that now that they are crafted, the game won't let me put them on because it says in the menu "in progress" when I select them. I can actually set the items on the floor and look at them, but if I take them, I still can't wear them yet. :steamsad:

You can't wear clothing that is not completed yet. Once you have finished crafting them, and get the "New xxxxkin pants/mittens/boots/coat.bedroll" icon on the right side of the screen, you can go into inventory and wera them. Until thenm they are just pieces of hide partially stitched together, having no finished and usable form.

Well, they LOOK finished and all spiffy sitting there on the floor and I'm currently not carrying or actively working on them near the workbench. Do I have to carry them around until they get "finished"? Taking them back to the workbench doesn't give me anything to do with them.

Nah, I drop mine on the floor in front of an indoor workbench, and pick them up to continue working on them when I have time or inclination to finish crafting them. Along with the remaining guts and hide I have on hand to finish the job. No point carrying all of that weight around if i can;t wear them. I don't craft all at once, too much time used up if it;s nice enough out to go hunt or fish or gather resources. I craft in 1 hour sessions, check my stats, check the weather outside. If my stats are good, and the weather is hostile outside, I go back and craft for another hour. If the weather gets nicer, I drop everything on the floor, hydrate and head outside to get things done while the weather allows. Then back to crafting when i get home again, until complete.

Well, the weather outside pretty much sucks right now and a nice fire is going, so I'll take them back to the workbench and see if I can work towards finishing them.

Here's what I'm thinking ... you probably were nearly done with them, but didn't quite have them finished. In the course of your day, you took the remaining necessary elements (guts or hide) that appeared to be left over and stowed them back wherever you tend to stow such items when not in use. This could explain (a) why you still can't wear them and (b) why it shows no ability to craft on them anymore.

Hope that's all it is and fixes your problem. I've had something like that happen to me once before and did the /facepalm ;)

LOL! @ccwylde70... I did that once. Only I didnlt have things stashed. I had enough hides and guts to make boots or pants completely, and needed a few more to make the toher completely too. I had started on boots, picked up all of my hides and guts, went to the workbench and clicked the crafting menu. and started making pants instead of finishing boots. Ten went back to finish making the boots. Finished them, Went back to finish the pants, Well crap. Now they are stuck in limbo because I didn;t have enough to make both. Put the boots on, dropped the unfinshable pants on the floor, and went out to hunt Bambi or hope to fins a carcass in one of the regular spawn locations. Took 7 days to get the last hide and guts I needed, while rabbit pelts from my snares piled up to dry all over the place. Lol! Lesson learned. Start one and finish it, don;t start the other until I am positive i have enough hides and guts for both.

OK, I figured it out. :steamfacepalm: I should have noticed the selection at the right in the menu for the time required for crafting. I also didn't pay attention to the AMOUNT of time required to craft these items. 9 hours for the pants and 12 hours for the boots! As IFIYGD figured out, I also discovered I'm now short one Bambi skin for the boots. Rats! I've got to go hunting again and then wait for that last hide to cure before I can finish my boots.

Lol! Not laughing at you, just chucking since, as I said, I found myself in the same newbie situation early on. Consider it a learning experience, go find a carcass to harvest or hunt a deer down, by bow, rifle or wolf. Next Sandbox will be different, as long as you remember this experience. :)

I know. The facepalm was appropriate. But this is weird. I started crafting a wolfskin coat. I go for about 2 hours, quit and put the coat on the floor. The next day the weather sucks, so I pick up the coat to do some more crafting and it says I need 4 more pelts and 2 more guts. What? Plus, there are now 2 coats on the floor when I go to pick it up, not just one. I was only crafting one. I never started 2 of them. Where'd the second coat come from? I've also noticed that I can't harvest either of the coats for skins to complete the other.

That sounds like a bug. You should report this in the Technical Sissues subforum, and include a pastebin copy of your output log, and an F8 in game beg report screenshot (uploaded from your desktop to community hub Artowrk for link copy to the post). I know folks who have been having duplicate arrows and other things happen after dropping items, but this is the first I have heard of it woith unfinished animal skin clothing dropped on the ground. Please post this in Tech Issues, so Hinterland can see it and use the output log and bug report screenshot to try to track and fix the bug. Cause that would be beyond annoying if it starts to pop up for a majority of players.

And sorry, that sucks big time m8. :((

Yeah, I guess I'll have to, especially if it happens again after I've gone through the trouble and ammo to hunt down 4 more wolves, then tried to complete at least one of the coats and ended up with even more of them, all unfinished. :steamsad:

EDIT: I just noticed that the F8 key has a lock symbol on it in the menu. Why is that?

The ones with locks in the menu cannot be bound to any other key, set key binding. That's all.

Thanks. That makes sense. I see when you hit F8 to take a screenshot, it leaves a yellow printed time and location stamp in the picture and throws it on the desktop. Is there anyway to take a screenshot that one could use as a desktop background? Some of the night scenes are pretty when the moon and stars are out.
