Northern lights help
I've been playing The Long Dark for the best part of 2 years and I've yet to see the Northern lights, despite having played at various levels in games lasting between 100-250 days and logged over 1,00 hours of game time. I've waited outside at midnight on a clear night and on through to the early morning countless times but have never ever seen them. What am I doing wrong? Is there a graphics setting I need (I play on customised low settings), or a particular region I need to be in (I've discovered and explored all the regions and found all locations), or am I just incredibly unlucky?

It's pure random in survival. Game pre-sets aurora only in story mode a few times. Region and all that stuff doesnt matter, also if you're in some kinda house you will notice green light coming through the windows, lights turning on, radio playing. You dont need to be outside.
Even i get aurora very rare, but still im living in a trapper's homestead so there is no light source or a radio. Kinda dissapointing.

P.S. Also i might be wrong, but if your save file is very old (from old patches that didnt have aurora) it probably doesnt have aurora in it.

Is this an old save? Before Wintermute? if so, that might be the case.

It's a post-Wintermute save. Thanks for the comments!

If you are really determined to see them, go play the story. There is an event in Chapter 2 when they'll appear for sure

I have only had the game for a couple of weeks and I am sure I have seen it more than once in sandbox. I didn't realise it was rare!

So I will consider myself lucky then.

I see it every time I play, sometimes more than once

They don't last long when the weather is changing often. If you pass time at night you can quit out when you hear the lights are on.

You can hear them when you sleep too. But you can't quit sleeping.

Hey , i ve got a game before wintermute, i' m about 650 days in the game, a lot of hours, but i cant see the aurora and i cant get in the door for the gunsmith due to this problem. Does anyone can confirm that it actually the old save that crates the problem ? It be a killer to begin from the beggining
I'm playing the game for the first time in years, never gotten more than a few days but I'm already on my second night with the Northern Lights showing up outside. My Mystery Lake Cabin I was preparing in suddenly lit up with green light from the outside and I ran outside to see what happened.. beautiful Northern Lights and electricity!

Check the patch notes from the update, I think they said you should start getting them now.
