Just get the fire started as you said. You don't need much fuel at first, just enough to keep it from dying out 'til it's hot enough to burn coal. When it's time for the coal, add just enough to get it up to 150C/270F. Depending on how much forging you want to do, at this point you can build up the length of the fire with sticks or wood. You don't need to use any more coal if you're trying to save it.
If you have the hammer, and required amounts of scrap metal in your pack, and cloth (if needed), simply click on the forge section, and a menu will pop up showing you what you can make and how long it will take. Make your selection and go to it!
Knives and Hatchets take a lot more time than arrow heads, so make sure you've got enough fuel in there to finish them. Also keep an eye on your hydration.
You can keep adding fuel between jobs if you want to keep the fire going longer.
Always stock a good amount of firewood/coal for emergency, specially in FM forge, because a blizzard can hit when you are finishing and without fire you will freeze there. Same if you need sleep there one more night. Is not good idea leave the place in middle of night.
