I got some advanced questions about survival mode. I'm playing on Voyageur
I've got a few hours in game, maybe around 30 or so and I love it. Just trying to become a better player before I hit the harder settings.

Right now I'm looking for 2 maps that I can cross okay. Mystery lake is very nice, I have a small base in the offices but I need another map to find some things I have not found yet. I went to milton but its a hard journey and I don't think I can carry alot back. So what are 2 good base sites that are on differnent maps but still close to each other.

Repairing clothing, one day I'll run out of sewing kits? I guess after enough long game play all the items will be broken down and I can only hunt and use furs. Is this correct?

Ive yet to find a forge, but should you only use coal at the forge unless its to save your life?

what is your favorite wood type? whats the best weight vs time wood out there?

is there a best meat that has the higest calories vs weight?

will can goods expire? if a can is at 80% how many days will it take for it to go bad?

I guess thats my questions. Thank you for helping me and making me a better player

From ML it's just a short trip to Coastal Highway

Repairing clothing, one day I'll run out of sewing kits? I
Yes, but you can sew with fishing tackles. Just takes longer

I guess after enough long game play all the items will be broken down and I can only hunt and use furs. Is this correct?
Clothing decays, yes. And if it breaks down before you find it it's gone. But there is tons of cloth in the game to repair things.

Ive yet to find a forge, but should you only use coal at the forge unless its to save your life?
You need coal to craft arrows and tools. Coal respawns in time (in caves and mines)

Coal is also great to warm up in general. Just one piece massively increases the fire temperatures and afterwards you only need to feed sticks to maintain it

whats the best weight vs time wood out there?
Sticks are life. Easy to pick and plentiful

is there a best meat that has the higest calories vs weight?
Bear, deer and moose meat. Fish is worst

if a can is at 80% how many days will it take for it to go bad?
Depends on the difficulty mode.

Well, it is not your duty move all stuff between maps, usualyl best is to have (at least) one major base at each.

Milton issue are wolves for me, I liked this place originalyl due story attentation but it is death trap (not so on voyageur but still..)
.

Likely 2nd "good" palce after Mystery lake worthy to explore and get used to is Coastal highway (from ML by Ravine)

One day you will run of everything.. but noted recently guy that lived 10 in game years! on Interloper difficulty... there is so much loot and stuff in Voyageur that I doubt you will live to depleting resources (just need move your butt in time:-)

Forge is probabyl nto so much needed on Voyageur too as there is enough of good quality tools. You need use coal there to get high temperatures for forging. Other than that coal is respawned in mines and is abundant resource - dont worry use it any time needed (eg. fast heat up, dutring harvest carcass, etc..)

¨Wood - I grab everything that dont need be harvested, that is imho waste of tools, time and calories (just using hammer or tools for broke in house crates or furniture if locked there due blizzard). Pickup free sticks are 90% I ever need.

It is not suggested to carry meat if not necessary - scent attract predators and wight/calory ratio is just bad. Better eat fully at morning/prior get on trip and get max 1 piece with you to "get rid odd it" soon. Probabyl deer venison is nto worst but still good enough. There is plenty of human made food and cat tails too, particularly on Voyageur.

Food and cloth slowly decay, speed vary type/piece by piece and food must be stored properly (mostly outside). Dont be so much worry about this - again you will probably never live to real shortage on Voyageur.

The easiest thing is to probably go down the railroad tracks past the dam with the goal of getting to coastal highway through ravine and then eventually down the highway to DP, where there is a forge. You'll find out that ML and those two zones have better weather than a lot of the other zones.

Starting a new game in ML I would think about going next to mountain town and then to forlorn muskeg. That way it is all downhill to connect to muskeg which you can then either loop back to ML or go on to Broken Railroad. There are forges in muskeg and railroad I believe, and you'll end up with a shorter trip to the forge from ML.

Cedar is the best wood if you need to carry it with you. Unfortunately one of the few things I dislike in TLD is that canned goods do decay. By, say, 100 days in you'll start noticing cans getting low percentage. At some point in the decay above zero condition there is a chance it will sicken you. Cans decay more slowly inside, while meat keeps better outside. I believe bear meat is the best meat ( though not the best food) in efficiency, but on some difficulties it can give you parasites even if cooked. At cooking skill 5 you will no longer get food poisoning from any cans, even ruined, or any cooked meat/other food.

You can use fishing tackle to sew with. You can create fishing tackle with string made from animal gut and a hook made from scrap metal. Supposedly many items have a chance of washing up on the sea shore, though I've never seen this.

Dont get yourself spoiled too much, magic is in discovering.

Keep well fed bonus as it is easy on voyageur and very benefical. With moose satchel you cna carry 40kg without epnalty and for climbing!

Have fun, camp in caves, sleep under the stars and enjoy it all:-)

Btw if you did not, you cna consider play Nomad challange first - it is actualyl well designed for get familiar with important map spots.

Coastal Highway provides good potential for loot, has a coal mine, affords a good base location at the Fishing Camp, and connects to ML via the Ravine (take train tracks left from Carter Dam). The Ravine is 100% safe with no predators and ample wildlife to hunt.

Clothing, even when ruined, will not de-spawn. You can still break it down for cloth. As mentioned, you can craft hooks from scrap metal, line from cured guts, and make fishing tackle with them. Fishing tackle can be used the same as a sewing kit.

You need 6-8 coal to make the forge hot enough to use.

Map a lot. Take screenshots of your map progress so you won't lose it when you die (which you will, many times)

Good luck!

Do not under any circumstances die.

But you will learn a lot from dying 30-50 times like the rest of us.

<sigh>
