Are the rifle sights off or something?
I finally found a rifle and I already had 20 bullets stored by the time I found it, so I decided to go out hunting for deer. However, even at decently close range, even when my iron sights are totally over the deer, my bullets missed. My aim is decently steady, and it looks quite obviously like a hit. I have missed every single shot, except the 15th, 19th, and 20th, which finally killed it. I believe all of the shots that hit were "quickscopes" and the rifle is above 70% condition the whole time. It's making me seriously angry that I've had to waste all of my bullets just to kill one deer, especially after all the stuff I barely survived just to get to this point. Are the sights wrong or have I been cheated by some kind of glitch or hitbox problem?

Yeah basically, i think it is a bug/glitch. I basically talk about it in another discussion right here:
https://steamcommunity.com/app/305620/discussions/0/3264459260614611278/

but imma summarise it right now

basically i make a far away wolf charge at me and i shoot it in the face when it gets close but when the new update came out i shoot it and like the bullet hits and everything because you can see the blood particles come off of it but the bullet that should have put that ♥♥♥♥♥ down somehow didnt register as a hit even though it did so instead of dropping dead, the wolf basically just takes my bullet and acts like nothing just happened ;___;

so i dont think the sights are wrong but i DO think hit registration/hitboxes are a bit ♥♥♥♥♥♥ atm

Getting your skill up is important. In my experience so far the first few shots are difficult but it evens out after a while. In the last week of gameplay I managed to kill 4 wolves and a moose with 1 bullet each. Before that it took 2-3 shots to get a kill. The bug that was there has been hotfixed already as far as I know.

The sights waver around, but the place the bullets hit seems to be a fixed point on the screen. I marked the spot the white dot appears when picking things up, and used that to line up shots. Even when my iron sights are completely off of the animal to the side, using that as my aim point gets me an instant wolf kill most of the time.

Personally I'm finding the Iron sight to be a joke. It's so big, there is no real aim point. I'm working with trying to use a piece of tape on that dot Ogre mentioned. The new update certainly didn't make aiming easier. Yes, it doesn't wave around much when conditions are good. But without a real aim point, it's close your eyes and pull the trigger at ten feet.

Skill might move the sights closer to where the bullets hit, but the bullets always hit the same spot on the screen so why even use the sights? Just learn to ignore them.

Yeah, I’ve shot three charging wolves at about 7 feet now, and each time it was a miss, despite me having the sights right on them. I was having some trouble with hitting a moose too, which was frustrating. I’ve heard that we need to essentially cover the animal with the sight now, rather than put it on the edge. I really hope not, since that would essentially make us blind to them while hunting.

That damned rifle......I reckon the guy before you must have tried to pry a car boot open with it !

The pistol is pretty good, close up....and the bow is great once you get used to it.

Screw the gun into the wolf's ear. At this range, my aim is pretty good.
Ya, it's like you're 303 is a smoothbore matchlock, not what was once a military rifle. The trick is forget the iron sight. A piece of tape where the dot is on the screen sometimes, and aim for that. There are other options that are easier, PowerOn just above me.
