Or you could do some trekking around HRV up to monolith lake and you may fine a moose carcass on the way. Also the one at monolith lake is not bad with the cave on the far side of the lake.
Or find the mysterious signal fire which could have a satchel already crafted for you.
If you get used to HRV, you'll be able to handle AC (similar maps in terms of "maze-yness" and vertical levels.
Get the satchel l, tech backpack and well-fed bonus for +15 Kg. It's worth it.
Edit: another reason I like the ML Dam/Ravine area for a start (eventually you'll get one with the right conditions).
Just like when you are flush on firewood, you see limbs all over, everywhere you go. The second you get low and head out to do some choppin', not a limb to be found.
No, I don't want 8 scrap metal, I just wanted the book of matches.
Anecdotally, probably the best place is Trapper's, but for whatever reason, it seems like the moose spawns there less frequently, even if it's the set place for it to spawn on that map. Again, I can't prove that, it's just what I've found across four or five survivor runs.
A place I found to be relatively good is the fishing hut in Pleasant Valley. If you plan it right, you can build a fire between you and the Moose, making sure the river is behind the moose. Shoot at it, and hopefully it will run away. Eventually it should run across the river. You can then stand on some rocks on the other side of the river and shoot it relatively safely.
If the moose doesn't spawn on whatever map you're on, even if you're in a place with moose markings in the trees, what I've done through several saves: stock up on food, firewood, and a safe place to sleep in the area. Camp out for 6 to 12 days. Usually the moose will show up within that range of days depending on spawn rate....
