The Long Dark

The Long Dark

Is there anyway to make more indoors storage?
I say this because I'm currently set up in the garage on Coastal Highway and have filled up the three lockers, the tool chest and several drawers with things, and I'm worried about running out of room and having to stuff things on the floor like a savage. I have a rock cairn outside for all my meats, and have cleared out all the cans and other items that I don't want in storage, but I'm still running out of room.

I know you can place items down and move them around in the actual world, but I'd prefer to keep as much inside of actual storage menus as I can.

As far as I know there is no way to add storage capacity within the Quonset Garage.

Maybe rethink how you organize your storage. I play Pilgrim and have a lot of stuff at the Garage but I don't think I have felt that I would run out of storage. But that's just me and the way I store stuff.

In the lockers I have 1 that is full of food, 1 half full of medical supplies and one that is full of firestarter stuff. The metal container is full of crafting scraps, the drawer under the desk is full of clothes that need to be scrapped. The tool chest is filled with my gun and tool stuff, then in the other desk there's a drawer full of water.

I have the smaller tool chest, a few drawers and such, and then I'm out of room entirely. The corner of the room is already piled with empty cans and other garbage items, and the floor itself has some pelts and guts curing. I feel like I should ditch some things but also don't want to. However I might have to since I want to make the move to the farmhouse at some point, mainly because of the stove.
Lol. No, you cannot build storage containers.
But I am curious how you are running out of storage at the QGS.
Back room- 2 sets of shelves, 3 lockers, 3 filing cabinets, 2 desks, 1 metal container.
Garage- tool chest, 2 workbenches, 2 sets of shelves (though the one with the radio is small), tons of floor space.
Restroom- 2 lockers, 1 set of shelves.
Front room- shelves galore and 2 coolers, counter-top where the register is.
You can use the cars outside and the truckbed on the truck out back, as well.

QGS is one of the locations with the most storage in the entire game world.
I hoard a lot of stuff, to the point where I should probably chuck some stuff. As I said though, I don't like putting items down in the gameworld, so even if there's space to place things, I prefer having them in physical storage, so even if it'd be more efficient to lay things out on the table or shelves or even the ground, I prefer keeping them in actual containers.
Keep in mind, all of that food you put in a locker will despawn when it reaches 0%. Leave it on the shelves if you want to be able to eat it after you get Lvl 5 cooking. Otherwise it will just *poof* away when it hits 0% in a container.
Throw all of the recycled cans in the bed of the truck out back, or in one of the car trunks out front. Same with tinder plugs, excess newsprint, cattails, and such.
Oh I eat through it pretty snappily, I pick whatever is looking worst then chow down on it. Only gotten food poisoning once as well! I should probably store the food physically somewhere I know but food is honestly my lowest concern because I have a full rifle and at any point can go out on the lake and snipe something for dinner. Plus out in my rock cairn there's a few kilograms of wolf meat for emergencies.

I don't want to put all the food out on the shelves in the shop because I usually do eating and drinking at night and so that's one of the reasons I like my stuff in a locker, I can access it in the dark without lighting up a lantern so I can see.
Ah, that actually makes sense.
Different playstyles for different people.

I wouldn't store food indoors/ in containers. As some have pointed out alrerady, if it reaches 0% in a contaienr it will vanish.
Also some (most) food will decay faster indoors compared to outdoors, so I keep all my foodstuff in front of whatever base I'm in (which is mostly raw meat now anyway).
I haven't yet had an issue with my food disappearing, I'm keeping meat outside and eating the looted stuff first, I usually just as fast as I gather it eat through it from doing book reading and such during the night when I have nothing else to do. Plus I'm honestly more worried about wolves stealing my hard-earned snacks than losing it.

Yeah, but there's still the issue of retrieving it without using a light. In the locker I can reach that in the dark just fine, but going outside to get it then coming back in would likely be too hard to do in pitch black darkness.
Use the car trunks outdoors to store meat and fish.
Yes, it is still a container, but it has the outdoor decay rate, and it will be safe from anything stealing from the pile, if they ever get wolf AI fixed to the point where they actually always steal from outdoor piles of meat and fish. (That part of the AI has been broken for a long time- for the longest time they only would grab meat and fish dropped outside if it was dropped as a decoy or dropped in their direct sight. Their detection of meat and fish left outdoors has not been working as intended according to Raph and other devs- I am guessing they are trying to fix that AI so wolves and timberwolves will always detect meat and fish left outdoors, instead of only detecting it *sometimes*.)
Car trunks are great for outdoor storage.

Grab it before you go indoors, and keep it in your backpack. It won't decay that much if you are going to be eating it within a few in-game hours. When you are ready to eat before sleeping, go into your inventory and eat it directly from there.

Tbh I'm probably gonna end up hauling the best bits of loot down to Trappers Cabin and living there, depending on how I feel when I get there. I remember liking that spot, but that was years ago when the game only had like 3 areas and the maps were way smaller xD
Yeah, the thing is that with my style, I mainly go on short excursions because I'm bad at planning and taking necessary supplies. Currently I@m out on an overnight trip to Mystery Lake to investigate the Trappers Cabin, and if that place turns out to not be worth it, gonna move to the Farmhouse for the 6-slot stove because that sounds like heaven for me.
I mean, I would do that, but I just feel like my carrying capacity isn't enough to properly roam around like that. I know I can do it, I made it to Mystery Lake after all, but I want to get the two backpacks before I start playing a roaming playstyle like that.
