I did just 48 on loper and i'm not reealy interested of finding them all..
They looks like a grave to me
Regards..
As for what they are there for in game? Just another curiousity to find and explore the maps for... They seem to memorials of such, to honor the (I assume kickstarter?) early backers of the game, a lot of them are unfinished, as I guess the backers get to make something up.
I haven't even explored all the regions yet, let alone search for all the cairns, but I know from a bit of experience that they can be tricky to find, and really require climbing all over the maps. Some also may not be as accessible as you would think, being in hard to reach areas or in areas we may not supposed to be in quite yet...(Broken railroad?)
My favorite so far.

Holy cow... Good job! that's the first time I've ever seen anybody come close to finding them all! That should earn you a special badge. :)
Cairns are exactly that. In BC times, headstones or burial markers were literally stacks of stones. I'm probably wrong but I believe Cairns are the first known headstones.
@Jiffy, I don't know of anyone and like @tyber, I'm not one to go searching. There are some sneaky ones in caves and few atop high places, so finding them all is truly a remarkable feat.
As Gecko states... it's in PV. In a different post I said if you didn't see it first from below, you wouldn't think to climb the rock it's sitting on.
