Beachcombing?
I've never HAD to beachcomb, since I haven't explored higher difficulties, but I went to the coast in DP (about 50 days in) just to check it out and didn't see anything on the ice.

Are there fixed "spawn points" for items? Or do they appear at random locations on the beach? I didn't go along the entire coastline, so maybe I just missed whatever was there. Just so I can get a rough idea, about how many items would you expect to find on all of the beach area in DP if you hadn't been there in weeks and swept the whole beach in one day?

Have you been close enough to the water? The stuff is so close that ice starts to crack. You have only about 3 seconds to get it before you fall in the water...

This is not true. Beachcombing refers to items that spawn on the edge of the ice in CH and DP that you have to run out on weak ice to get. I don't know how often they respawn but one interloper player lived 10 game years by beachcombing items. ozman i think.

I´ve found just yesterday: 4kg fish, 3 clothes, 1 dried leather, wood and 3 cattails. I´ve made a huge fiesta then in a fihing hut with door on the coastal highway! :)

a pair of leather shoes =*.*= (<-- that´s a wolf eager to eat your leather shoes) .

To answer the original question, yes there are certain, specific areas that items wash up onto the edge of the ice shelf. Most of these areas are thin ice, so best to reduce your carry weight as much as possible (I drop everything including clothes, so if I do take a dip I have nice dry clothes to put on to help get warm again.) There are a couple of safer spots, one is by the large rocky outcrop behind the lighthouse in DP, most of the items that appear there are on ice that seems not to be thin enough to break. Another relatively safe spot to look is behind the broken lighthouse in BI.

I usually seen 3-5 items per spot and think they re-spawn about weekly, but that is a wild guess that I don't have evidence for.

you can think about the beach finally if you on day 6000 with the blackrock stuff maybe on day 7000 then :X. there is still so much stuff in the game if you do it right from the first day on you are good without the beach until day 10000++++. (counts for interloper) just my opinion based on my experience

Those of us who live in coastal area's don't call walking on thin ice beachcombing, I don't care what they call the "mechanic" in the wiki.
Er... it's just a term of art used in the game. It's not meant as a literal definition.

I found a maple sapling, a pair of Trail Boots and something else of no consequence at CH without walking on thin ice first time out. I didn't start in that region and it'll probably take a long time for something new to spawn there but be sure to take them so it can.

Rational Bassist has a 14 year interloper file, so roughly 5000 days and he does use beachcombing quite a lot. Apparently he really needs it to get more cloth and saplings. But I don't know if it's just an easier way to get materials instead of chasing the houses where there are still curtains, or these few spots with growing saplings.

That being said, yeah, until beachcombing becomes your only way to get stuff, you have a very long way to go.

i am on day 5000+ in a week too and i still have 300+ cloth left and can get me more from the iron chairs. finally you need just cloth for the bedroll repair 2 in around 100 days. birchsaplings i have 34 left but i hunted allready 165 moose, over 400+ bears, up to 600+ wolves so i still have meat to reach 20k days+

if i could change my playstyle at the first days this means not killing wolves for fun and just 1 moose would give me more saplings so it was a waste. same like the cloth i run with cloth gear around the first 1600 days now i just use fur gear so i wasted alot of cloth for repair.

if you dont like to play 10k+ day games u dont need the beach

Wow, you should open your profile to reveal all that real time hard work! No way I would ever invest that much time in a single game even if they paid me.

"if you dont like to play 10k+ day games u dont need the beach" which is why I didn't hang around and kept on exploring.

i do i record every single hour of my gameplay after day 800 on YT :) i know the playtime to reach this and if normal players go for 500 days that is a great success and alot of fun.

and the beach is not really fun to check it all the time if you can do some hunting and so on

1. Make sure it's a nice day out before you try this insanity. The reason is because you don't want the weather to suddenly turn bad enough to blow a fire out.

2. Find a nice spot for a roaring fire. Light it with your spyglass (remember sun should be out). Put enough wood on it for several hours. :lunar2019madpig:

3. Take your clothes off by the fire, you sexy devil. :lunar2019shockedpig:

4. Now try to run out and grab whatever item you've spotted from the beach. If you fall through (like I always do), run back to fire and put your duds back on.

You can also eat or drink a hot item before trying this. A can of hot soup works well here.

Thanks for this! With my Voyageur level save, I never did beachcombing because I was too nervous I'd fall in, even with crampons. But when I booted up the old save a couple of weeks ago, I thought I'd try it if I found stuff that was enticing. I found a flare shell and a bottle of pills, so I practiced running to and from the item to work on my timing. I found that getting back and forth isn't the problem. It's aiming the tiny little reticle to pick up the item. I *always*fall in, lol. Glad to hear it's not just me.
