Climbing rope needed for summit ascent?
I plan on climbing Timberwolf Mountain for the first time. Do I need to bring a climbing rope with me for the ascent or possibly for a short-cut descent?

You don't need extra rope but there are short cuts that you can make, but obviously you have to go the long way around first. There should be some rope in the hut and also up in one of the caves on the mountain. I suggest bringing some form of weapon because there is a bear in a certain area, but overall it's the cold that is the most debilitating. Make sure to bring a hacksaw as well. You can find this in the hut or possibly at the summit.

There is a little cave right near (beneath) the summit rope that usually contains a free rope; there is also another little cave at the top of the summit which can also contain a rope.

So I wouldn't worry about bringing an extra rope. I would just try to be as lightweight as possible (don't bring excess food/water...) and make sure your hacksaw is in tip-top condition.

Ok, thnx.

I have always found 1-3 extra ropes around the Summit, so there is no need to bring rope. Just a bedroll, hacksaw, and coffee. :coffeeTLD::campfireTLD::coffeeTLD:

No prybar needed?

Also remember, that every container has TWO compartments.

Damn, I'm actually getting quite nervous about it. I plan on stripping down my carry weight to the bare essentials. Only thing is, I don't know the way yet (don't tell me please), so I might be doing some searching in other areas before I actually find it and then I probably won't want to go back to my base and drop off excess gear. So do I bring hammer and flare in case of wolves, do I bring bow and arrow to secure food on the go?
This generally always happens to me when I plan on travelling light. I start thinking "but what if..." and before you know it, I'm carrying 30+kg again.

I also explored tmw blind, drawing a paper map as I went. Tricky, but very satisfying.

You'll want a weapon and a flare or two for wolves, doesn't have to be the hammer. Bedroll is almost required, but snow shelters (needs cloth) will do in a punch.
Some food on the way, you don't strictly need your bow. But... You might find it's such an interesting trip that you want to hunt and hunker down in a couple places...

Tough one, because there is a lot of loot at the top that you want as little as possible to make carrying it down easier.

There is a way to the summit. There are shortcuts that can be implemented. One shortcut makes it easier (after the initial effort) to get to the summit and down to Mountaineer Hut. Of course wolves and bears may object. One shortcut I recall was broken - one could go down but once one stepped away from the rope the terrain prevented one from getting to the rope to climb up. Maybe that's fixed.

Just be careful how you go about putting them into play. There is only one rope in the default Timberwolf path that cannot be bypassed and people have taken that rope to deploy for a shortcut (the broken one was nearby) or taken the rope then skyrimmed down from the summit then found they had cut off their access.

Good luck.

If it is your first time making the trip (and avoiding spoilers) then it makes sense to bring some extra things in case you get lost or run into trouble. You can always make multiple trips to get the rest of the loot, but not if you are dead. A bow and a few arrows will make the trip a bit safer, as there are predators and deer on the way.

Edit: If you want to take the cautious approach, break the trip up into stages: explore up the mountain a little until you find a cave or something, then turn that cave into a waypoint, stocking it with food, sticks, and water. If you need to, you can always fall back to your previous base/waypoint because it is not far. Then explore a little farther, make another waypoint, and repeat. :rabbitTLD:

Yes, specially if take the "wrong" path, will face wolves and bear. :steammocking:

Getting off topic but I gave up on my hrv map. What a weird place :)

Also... Under the plane? Could be the first I've heard of that. I know there's a few things in the body of the plane that get missed on first look, but under... Huh

I made it to the mountaineering hut, so I can begin preparing. I shot a deer when I arrived so I'm good on food for now. The treck from PV and quartering the deer in the wind have left me low on condition though so I'll need to get my strength back up. At least the weather here seems better than in PV.
