Interloper is unfair, unfun.
I have just finished trying over a dozen Interloper runs, and all of them have ended in death in less than a day. Almost every spawn was on top of Timberwolf Mountain, in Muskeg or some other bleak nightmare with absolutely nothing around. Loper gives you a tin can, a pair of jeans and a T-shirt and says "go craft what you need to survive." Here's the problem: I can't reach warmth or safety from wolves fast enough to START crafting what I need to survive. It's hard to think about making improvised hand or head wraps, or forging makeshift weapons when I'm suffering from hypothermia desperately looking for that one box of matches in the whole level, or running from wolves who aggroed me from half a mile away.

There are some people who do 500-day runs in this mode. I don't see how. It's sadistically unfair and almost seems like the game hates you. I won't be doing any more Loper runs.

What you mean to say is that you are not good enough at the game to play interloper yet. You need to know the zoness, know where there is shelter, know where there are resources and crafts stations. Interloper is NOT for beginners. It's to create an extra hard mode for those that think Stalker is too easy. Learn the maps at a lower difficulty and then go try interloper again.

All my Interloper best starts were from TWM. Fast run TWM - PV - ML and you have a decent gear, then CH - DP and you have everything to survive whatever time you want.
And everything that those ^^^ above said.
Don't forget - there are some GUARANTEED matches spawns. You just need to know where.

Next time you spawn in Muskeg:
1st objective: reach the Poarchers Camp (derailed train cars).
In the way pick all cat tails and sticks you find.
In Poarchers are a flare, use then for lit the fire barrel, make some water, e.g. 2 litters what will take ~2.5 hours.

Take half dozen or more of torches from fire, and then leave for Mistery Lake, chaining torches, go for Trappers or Camp Office, with luck you reach there with torch lit, make fire again and boil most water you can - 10 or more liters.

Next days, loot all Mistery Lake, make improvised head and hands protection.
When find a Heavy Hammer and Hacksaw you are ready for go forge a cutting tool and arrow points.

Probable Desolation Point is the best choice for you, although the more length way. Muskeg is more close but require know the paths through the ice and wolf avoidance.

Interloper isn't unfair. Experienced loper players can get 99 out of a 100 runs going without dying in early game. I suggest doing the normal learning progression - 100 ish hours of voyager or until it starts feeling too easy. Then 100 ish hours of stalker, and then finally start poking interloper. Most people die like 20 times when they are learning loper basics, don't expect to succeed right off the bat.

I tried interloper once and frankly it doesn't interest me at all. As they say; comparison is the death of joy. More than happy with Stalker or custom settings if I can figure out what it does.

First thing I do is to go and get my guaranteed matches as fast as possible. Not losing way too much condition. In TWM I almost always spawn just beside 3 way cave. And your matches are guaranteed there.. If I don't spawn there, just drop down to the cabin. In FM, you have guaranteed matches in Old Spance's. In PV you have those in the farm's basement and so on and so on.. Every interloper spawning region has guaranteed matches. And you can't spawn in regions like ML. You will always spawn in "harder" regions.

Find those guaranteed matches (you have to know where they are if you wanna play loper), light a fire and pull a lot of torches.. Use torches as a warmth bonus and as a protection from wolves (they won't attack if you have one and you can scare them with rocks or just ignore them if you have torch/flare). Next time light a torch with a match and light a fire with a torch. This way you save your matches. Later in the run you don't have to do this, there are lots of matches and you have guaranteed mag lens in ML in one of 3 locations.

How about the challange?
I just finished "As the sleep death", which is interloperd difficult, and it's one of my best game experience in TLD.

IMO.
Yes, it is "unfair". Even ingame description mentions that.
Yes, it requires whole lot of metagaming to survive.
No, it is not too hard. It is possible to survive for 1000-s of days starting in any location...

Interloper was specifically made for people who learned the maps and know everything about the game, but still want some sort of a challenge.
If you find it unfun do not play it, use stalker or custom. I personally do not like interloper either and tend to play on custom with some tweaks to base interloper difficulty...

One of the stupidest thing in all survivivng is a cabin fever. Srsly?
Maybe interloper is not for fun? It's more like training course for special forces to me.

dont worry watch some videos and get a feeling for this. once you know how the best way is to start it will be easier. i think watching videos will help you more then reading how to do it.

you also could try the challenge ATDS this trains you surviving skills and traveling in the cold

FYI I only have a total of 191.5 hours in the entire game, and probably half of that is in story mode. I guess I'm just not experienced enough at the game to know how to survive in Interloper. Good for those of you who can. It's not for me.
I may offer you this custom mode for practice: C04w-AQDc-KFDs-I5Uo-AWMK
  • Pilgrim / below Pilgrim weather, needs and starting gear. All afflictions disabled. Explore freely without freezing to death.
  • Passive wildlife. Stalker level wolf density. You will learn all possible wolf spawns without the risk of dying.
  • Interloper loots. You will learn where the essentials are. Matches, bedroll, heavy hammer etc.

And that's the other thing: People are all like "just go here and get this and set this up and find this" but I don't know the maps well enough to know what any of you are talking about. I guess that's the problem, huh? The only maps I know pretty well are Mystery Lake, Pleasant Valley and Milton town, and I'm starting to learn Desolation Point a little bit better. But all of the "tough" maps like Muskeg, Timberwolf, Bleak Inlet, etc. etc. I don't really know, so that's probably why I keep dying. I don't know what direction to go when I start and where to start looking for shelter and supplies. Man I'd sure love to be one of you elite gamers with a thousand hours in the game who can confidently say they've conquered all of the maps, but alas I'm not. My greatest fear in gaming is that I will be branded a "CASUAL" but I guess that's what I am. Oh well.
That's how things are. Interloper requires a knowledge of almost all maps and where the most crucial items spawn. Without it surviving in this mode for longer is near impossible.
I've never seen anyone call someone a "casual" just because this person doesn't play on Interloper. The very idea of this sounds ridiculous. It's not CS:GO where you strive for higher ranks. Just play the game however you like.
