Outdoor workbench on CH - is it safe?
Can animals attack you while you craft items at the outdoor workbench in the fishing camp in coastal highway? How do time-forwarding activities like crafting, fishing, and starting fires affect animals? I have never been attacked under these circumstances, but there is a bear that likes to walk right past the workbench, and I'm afraid to even start my wolf-skin coat until I know!

Short answer is yes they can. If you are in their detection radius, then they will probably come your way. Work in small chunks (an hour or two) when working with an outside workbench as time forwarding activities advance the environment around you (I.e. a blizzard could very well roll in, or a wolf and/or bear could wander into the area).

If you are concerned about animal attacks, why not use the workbench inside the Quonset Hut? Or are you doing an outdoor only challenge?

I don't like to use that bench for anything that takes over half an hour. I've had a few experiences with a wolf on stalker that likes to patrol nearby. The last time I was making a fishing tackle there, I heard a wolf growling just after I started crafting. It started running towards me just as I finished crafting and I was able to make it indoors by sprinting quickly, but it was very close. I don't know if a wolf can actually attack you while you're in the act of crafting, but I feel like it's probably possible from what I experienced.

It's also quite unnerving to use that work bench in the hunted challenge (I've got a long-term survival game I'm doing in the hunted 1. It's around 80 days now that I've survived with the old bear after me). You never know when that bear's going to come out of nowhere.

There is a bear that paths that way on some spawns. You might be to minimize the danger by crouching it it will let you. I harvest all game that way and so far have never been attacked. It could be luck instead of any real benefit but I won't mess with success until I no longer succeed.

I can confirm that at least one spawn leads to attack, it was a while ago when I was crafting some fishing tackles and arrows. When one crafting ended, that bear attacked me so fast that couldn't do anything...

Okay thanks for the good advice. I have been avoiding the quonset gas station due to the wolf population and the snowy terrain that conceals them. I can get over there, but often get stuck inside buildings for long periods due to the hazards of leaving. I regularly fight lone wolves and kill them for their pelts, but groups of them still unnerve me in the game. And I am only playing on voyageur! It's a pity that there is no safe way to save games and return to them no matter what happens.

I've used it on Interloper to make rabbit mitts and deer boots (always kept a fire going beside it). A wolf used to path out near the pier by the first fishing hut on some of my other 'Loper spawns, but I haven't seen him with this character. I know on Stalker there used to be a wolf that would hide on the snow drift side of the pier near the crafting table sometimes, though ....

Since the Vigilant Trespass update, the wolf that specifically paths through the fishing camp and docks has basically disappeared. I only play Pilgrim and it would run away when I came out, yelping in panic, but after the update it has been notable by its consistent absence. The bear does still path through the camp, but that seems to happen much more rarely than before and it sticks to the road or the main drag through the camp.

There is a wolf that seems to alternate with the deer in the area West of the fishing camp. But that wolf does not come close enough to the camp to appear to be a real threat.

Does not mean that the work bench in the camp is safe, I got deeply chilled when a blizzard rolled in while I was crafting something, but it certainly seems like it is reasonably safe. Of course, I am in Pilgrim so YMMV.

I've seen the wolf that wanders out past the fishing camp in my current voyageur session. In fact, I've killed it about 3 times.

Can you get a snow shelter up next to it? That might work

I could be wrong, but I think it's too hilly for the game to allow the shelter to be built. Plus I think the shelter doesn't protect against animals.
