Ash Canyon Best Shelter?
I have currently made my way from TWM and now in AC. Found the Mine and have the goodies from there. But not sure if I should stay & explore or leave the region. Is the Angler’s Den the best place for a base? Thanks guys in advance.

Angler's Den, or Homesteader's Respite, both are good.

As you probable have bedroll, Climbers Cave is more convenient place, because from there you can go to every corner.

But avoid gro for lower levels (Angler's Den, Bitter Marsh) because will have a long and "wolf" path for return to this cave.

Problem with Angler's Den is that all exits from this valley is patrolled by wolves.
Is a good place for a base to stay, but not for base for explore surroundings.

Those wolves afraid of shadow.

Not on Loper, they're not.

Angler's Den is good and probably the easiest to get around from.
Don't know about the rest of you but this map pretty boring. Unless of course you love climbing ropes, which i find exceedingly stupid.

I'm currently on a run of AC only on interloper and I've tried every interior location as a base. It really depends on your game mode, goals, skill level, etc. But for interloper the best long-term base is definitely angler's den, simply because it has a crafting bench and is well located. If homesteader's respite had a crafting bench it would be #1 imo despite the rope climb (crampons offset it pretty effectively). If you already have plenty of equipment etc. and don't really need a crafting bench much then I think homesteader's or miner's folly both work fine, but miner's folly has very limited food resources and it becomes a real pain trying to get food after the bear meat runs out.

AC has lots of potential bases depending on your game mode and play style.
I have shifted from survival/avoidance to hunter/gatherer .
My current base is anglers den due to the craft bench and proximity to fish for bait.

Ash Canyon has so many tree climbs you should be able to handle any threat from wolves and bears with just a bow.

Mining Camp has a nice barn that you can hunt bear from with no real danger of being mauled. This allows you to work on face shot with the bow. worst case you piss the bear off and it runs around being all mad and you can get some funny screen grabs in safety.

"Angler's Den" doesn't have a fishing hut, for some frustrating reason, but it does have a work bench. I'm currently searching around for a place that has both?

There's only one fishing hut in AC and it's not too far from Angler's Den (but it is through wolf territory). You could try the level above the fishing hut (Homesteader's something or other - I forget). You would need to climb a rope to go fishing which is not ideal, but it is the closest base location.

Has anyone else noticed the wolves acting funny near Angler's Den? It's like they can't path right on the ice. There are places where they just stop chasing you, spaz out for a bit, then run away.

No hut directly but it is close enough to make it worth while.
I only cook fish when I need oil so carrying a stinky fish is a nice way to get wolves interested.

I've held off on providing my opinion of this map so far. I am on day 35 here and have mapped the region 95% and am sitting out an early morning blizzard in Bitter Marsh. Once the weather clears I'm heading up to what i think is Homesteaders...been looking for it since I got here and just found a "cabin" icon to my East when I mapped BM.

IMHO, this map is by far one of the best ever created for the game.

Yep, I'll chime in and say I agree this map is very good, maybe one of the best. I like that it has a mix of just a very few indoor locations, but is 90% outdoor, and it's incredibly well designed and makes exploration both challenging and rewarding. I opted to do my first and only run here in Voyager mode, which I basically never play, but for this zone in particular it worked out nicely, allowing me to get pretty much fully geared up once I'd hit all the locations and found the occasional hidden loot spots. I don't know if you can find a bear coat in any other difficulty, but that was a sweet find, which I completely missed when I came through and only spotted when I came back on a whim.

For me the base preference is Angler's Den, a no-brainer. I've always preferred indoor bases, and this one has good location relative to the key spots for long term sustainability, with of course the crafting bench. I could see using Homesteaders for a stretch to build up fishing skill and stock up on meat, but the trek to "unlock" it probably isn't worth it if you're not playing to 100% explore, but mostly focusing on just the survival and progression. I think it works best as an emergency shelter if you find yourself stuck in a blizzard and need to get indoors, assuming you did get the rope set up.

once you explored this map to 100% you just need foodcamps there. at miners folly with bear food and at the 2 moose spawns with the meat from some wolves or the moose but only if you like to hunt all mooses the time. there is no reason to live there on a dead end or bring gear to this region. i have as example my central base at the dam. from there i can all routes

The base at TWM is my favorite so far. It has fishing right there near the cabin, rabbit grove, deer, a bear den nearby, lots of sticks and branches, a workbench and if you find a hacksaw, some cool loots scattered around. Plus I keep finding bodies with good loots on them like books and ammo. And it's flat near the cabin so I can see wolfs from a long way off.
