I think what you potentially need to do is take the mountaineering rope from either:
1) Unhitch the final rope you climb when leaving Mountain Town towards Mystery Lake
2) Unhitch the rope north east of the Camp Office in Mystery Lake in the area called "Lake Overlook"
This is assuming you are doing the following route:
1) Broken Railroad
2) Hushed River Valley
3) Ravine
4) Desolation Point
5) Timberwolf Mountain
Luckily (and surprisingly) I've got the food to afford what will probably end up being a whole day's setback, running back to grab a rope.
