Desperation (Unarmed): Medium attack speed, very low damage per attack. Likely to result in a player loss on Stalker and Interloper, and/or if Fatigue is below half.
Hunting knife (or Improvised knife, Scrap metal shard): Fast attack speed, low damage per attack, 100% chance to apply Blood loss to Wolf if struggle is won.
Hatchet (or Improvised hatchet): Medium attack speed, high damage per attack, 90% chance to apply Blood loss to Wolf if struggle is won.
Prybar: Medium attack speed, medium damage per attack.
Heavy hammer Slow attack speed, high damage per attack. 15% chance to scare Wolf off immediately per attack, 5% chance to kill wolf instantly per attack.
Revolver: Medium attack speed, low damage per attack (increases with Revolver Survival skills). After 3 seconds of Wolf Struggle, the 'Take Shot' option becomes available (if the Revolver is loaded), which if used by right-clicking will end the struggle immediately and consume one Revolver ammunition by frightening the wolf, with a chance to apply Blood loss to the wolf, or kill it instantly.

tl;dr -- The hatchet does the most damage to the wolf (greatest chance to kill it/bleed to death) but the heavy hammer may scare the wolf off quicker. I believe I have seen loper players mention they prefer the heavy hammer(?)
So does the condition of the weapon factor into how much damage you do to the wolf? For example, is a hatchet at 90% more likely to kill the wolf than a hatchet at 20%?
Thanks.
I might also expand on your question cause I'm curious too.
Does the improvised hatchet do different damage than a regular hatchet? I've read the wiki and it says about the improvised being heavier and 1/3 slower. But I'm not sure about damage.
So since the improvised tools are better to craft with. Are the improvised tools better to struggle with?
*At the moment I'm on interloper and just use the hammer to try end struggles fast.
Well when I go to craft a Bearskin Coat for example, it say's in my game it'll take 60 hours with a Hunting Knife or 39 hours with an Improvised Knife. So it does appear that improvised tools are better to craft with. Looking at everything, they seem much faster to use when crafting.
That's why I'm wondering if there is a difference with them in struggles.
Improvised tools are not faster.
Ah ok. Good to know I guess.
So I'll keep using the hammer for struggles. I was hoping maybe the improvised hatchet did more damage than the normal(then I might try it). But if all the crafting is actually worse and it's bugged, then fair to guess the hammer is better. (keeps me alive at least mostly)
But if I have to choose, I'll take the hatchet over the hammer any day just because it's slightly lighter and has a better utility (e.g. can clear scrub bushes in HRV).
