Changes in strategy to get to level 5 archery
It use to be we could drop a decoy to distract a wolf so you could kill it with a bow. I would have cooking level 5 up first so no need to worry about parasites. What changes are you making to get to increase your archery skill?

Does target practice behind the barn help?

Yes, Rabbits, Alerting a wolf where there is a narrow place so he cannot zigzag like a dock or a tree. When I can get to BR The maintenance yard office is a great blind. Being able to shoot while crouched at Level 5 is so helpful.

How many arrows does it take on average to kill a bear for you?

A bear is highly situational. At Trappers, I can generally lure the bear into a specific approach. I have one shot him several times from the upper railing at the cabin down to the beginning of the path up to the cabin.

I have also been charged by him many times :) but jumping down from the rocks and crouching usually breaks his charge.

One. It is always only one arrow. =)
EDIT: What I wanted to say - I don't try to boost archery level unlike cooking. I just let it grow.

I have on more than one occasion boosted my archery via bunny. Sure it kills the equipment you are using, but it's better to have a level 5 bow with 90% of the arrows you can ever have than a level 3 bow with 100%. Besides, how many of us have ever run out of saplings?

This is so true. Saving saplings, whetstones, cloth, matches, metal and other items is so futile it's laughable. We simply can't live long enough to use them up. I know of one guy who is the exception, but with the new wolf AI I don't know if he dares to play his 10 year run.

Hunt rabbits with arrows. Shoot wounded wolves a second time to get two skill points for one animal. Make lots of arrows.

In my spare time I craft arrows. As soon as I find additional feathers that is. I usually forge around 20-ish arrow heads. I shoot things (rabbits and deers) - break arrows - make arrows - shoot things...

No, just tested it
True you do not gain skill by shooting but it does help. I have a pilgrim run that is all I do is shoot at the target.
