They're in the "real" game, the survival mode. Stop messing about in the made-up nonsense and go star in your own EPIC :)
Just kidding. If story mode is your thing, god bless. I've never played the story mode so can't comment, but they're in Survival mode.
haha no I've been following the game's progress on YouTube but have bought it not too long ago. and yes, I did lose all my saves after the update a couple of months ago and I was on episode 2 which is where I am now again :)
(if you already know what a ferro rod is please ignore this last paragraph lol )
I'm into survival and bushcraft (in real life) and I'm after a very specific device which is called a ferro rod, fire rod, fire starter. it's usually a bar of metal thick as the pinkie finger. and you shave off the metal which creates sparks. it's a more versatile option compared to matches or lighters.
but the story line is fun too :( though it sucks that I'm on episode 2 and I've yet to see one
https://thelongdark.fandom.com/wiki/Firestriker
A 100% fire striker loses 2% of condition with each use so that is 50 uses which is about the equivalent of 4 boxes (12 each) of wood matches in the game. That would seem unrealistically fast, for sure, but then the story mode was expected to have a duration of less than 100 game days (the original decay line) and that likely affected the decisions made about game mechanics and tool condition loss.

As you can see the outer layer is aluminum and the rod threads inside. There's an o-ring in the design. These types of *strikers are very good for situations where you might deal with salt water. Salt water will degrade ferro rods.
