Horror Mod
I've tried a google search and haven't found any suggestions for this, only a crappy fantasy creature idea that wasn't fleshed out.

Is there an ongoing discussion with ideas to increase the horror element of the game? I was thinking of horror from hallucination of the dead people in the house during aurora lights, or creepy tones from the radio, or ghostly images that are just mirages of hope (like a person appearing in the far distance during a blizzard, but fading out after a few seconds or if you approach in that direction.)

I thought of this as my girlfriend sometimes jumps as I light the lantern and there's a corpse sitting up facing me in the background.

Cheers for anyone providing links to older posts, or ideas that they think of that can add a realistic horror element.

To my knowledge there isn't a mod of any kind for this game, but in terms of scare factors i've heard some idea thrown around in the past. If you want a scarier version of this game, as strange as it might sound, the best place to look is in the early versions of this game. No joke, it was way scarier back in the early days. There are a few guides on the interenet on how to download old versions of games from the steam database, and once you get that down the rest is easy. I do think the game needs more scare factor; the survival mode night music provides the base for it, but it's an empty shell really. Nothing is scary anymore sadly...

If/when they open this game up to actual modding, this sort of thing will happen.

Right now, there are no proper mods.

Scariest thing I can ever remember happening is getting attacked by two wolves, barely making it back to the camp office in Mystery Lake in a black and grey blizzard, lighting a fir fire to shake the cold, and crawling into bed nearly dead. Used the last of my food and water, set 10 hours sleep. Barely slept at all and a message popped up saying "Something woke you up." Pitch black, silent, the blizzard had stopped.

Most terrified I've ever been in this game. Turns out this was a feature meant to help! But the timing caught me when I was 100% on edge. :D:

Some sort of cabin fever mod or psychosis that manifests in a hundred+ day games could be interesting. Very rare sounds of something not there. It would be intense but I don't think it adds to Hinterland's pure survival experience, so it probably won't happen before modding, which is distant future.

Some of them may even be slightly serious. Slightly.

Personally, I don't need this any scarier than it already is. It's bad enough that a dog barking irl will put me off of my feed for a couple of hours lol. If you genuinely want it scarier, have a game on stalker where you spend a lot of time walking around coastal highway, forlorn muskeag, broken railroad, milton, or timberwolf mountain at night during auroras.

You want scarier, try fumbling your way round the Camp Office in the pitch black when you first enter it on a run, when the corpse has spawned there. Climbing to the top of the stairs in the dark and lighting a match, that'll make you jump a tad, well it will the first time. The first time you hear the bear/wolves, snuffling and scuffling around your cabin at night, even in the day can be pretty damn scary. :)

I still think having no Pancakes in a Canadian game is possibly the most horrifying thing, ever.

Thats true iheartmyocd and Nil Desperandum, add to the effect the sometimes very quiet music that plays, which is really nice sometimes.

Ahhh! The music and the noises, especially in Carter Hydro Dam, they both spook me out there. Hinterland removed Fluffy but left all the scary stuff that went with her. :)

Everytime I start a new game, I still look out for fluffy, even though I'm 99.99% sure she will never spawn.

Fluffy has left deep mental scars on all of us I think.

Honestly this game is terrifying as it is.,,,, try having 3 scent bars and getting lost in heavy fog.. Or worse yet at night time (not a night when the moon shining, but one of those pitch black nights.) Bonus points if you've been playing that character for longer than a week.

+1

This old man's heart can't take more than what I have now.

Maybe if we all start chanting "Fluffy, Fluffy, Fluffy" while playing she'll make a rreappearance. :steamhappy:

She has. Just in a different and new location.
Moved to Wishlist forum.

As a reminder we do not support modding of The Long Dark at this time. Since this seems more like a wish than a mod discussion we'll leave this open for now.
