When you can't find a hacksaw in Interloper
I'm on day 13 in my latest Interloper run and I usually have my wares to construct archery materials by now. But I've been all over the Mystery Lake map (and the homestead in Pleasant Valley) and haven't found a hacksaw anywhere and hardly any scrap metal for that matter. I can't construct a hatchet and therefore obviously can't proceed to crafting the hunting gear.

What moves would you guys make at this point? Travel to a different region and look for a hacksaw, search specific locations for scrap metals, or live on fishing until death? Let me know. I usually die around now so I want to make it at least a little longer.

I'd move on to CH , where there are a lot of possible spots for hacksaw...and its on the way to DP forge

PV - it's early days so the weather won't be completely fatal. I'd do a straight, two point run - the outlying barn and then the farmstead (basement) for a hacksaw. Then off to TWM and Mountaineers, and then after that a summit run. There is almost always a hacksaw hiding in the tail section, and that alone is 50% of your hacksaw needs for an entire run so it's worth the gamble. (End of the plane, under some wreckage usually).

Hmmmm... i think you are just to slow afterall. Im also Day 13 right now and i cleared my starting point pleasant valley, coastel Highway, Desolation Point and the transition areas. As iheartmyocd said: early days id use to travel fast. Of course i dont cover the whole regions, just the spots where good gear is to be found. By now i have two hacksaws, two hammers, three crowbars, two lanterns, two canopeners, crafted knive and ax and 8 arrowheads and am on my way to mysteery lake.

The 1st 20-30 days you need to move constantly to gather euipment. Grab these cattails and move to key locations. If you stop you will die. Later you can set a base and live for very long crafting better gear.

You should always loot in PV: Radio Tower, the Barn, Framstead, Rural Crossroads and the transition cave between CH and PV. Check also well the dam.

If you do not find it in PV I would move to CH and DP.

Here you have some guide that may help you survive longer:

Yeah, I never figured out all the ideal strategies for Interloper despite not really being new to it. So I always just hang out in Mystery Lake, never go to other regions, and die around Day 10. I probably waited too long to be successful in this session, but I'll take everybody's advice and move around more. Thanks.

One way to go about it:
start in TMW or PV. Then go to ML (you can stash your stuff in the trailer in front of the dam), then to CH. Then when your condition is recovered a bit go to DP to forge your tools (need a heavy hammer, but you should have one between those regions) and arrowheads. Return to CH and settle down for a bit.
While you do that use your hacksaw to harvest saplings and at least 5 deer hides from carcasses. Cure 4 rabbit pelts. Now make the rabbit skin mittens, the deer skin boots, and the deer skin pants (possibly even two).

Make your bow and arrows. Hunt 8 wolves. Lots of those around Quonset Garage. Make two wolf skin coats.
If you're lucky you can hunt a moose giving you lots of food and allowing you make the moose hide satchel.

But before you settle down to craft your stuff always keep moving. Only stay in a place to warm up for an hour or to sleep for the night.

But even just ML should allow you live more than 10 days. There are tons of cat tails around the lake, the river and unnamed pond. Collect them while the weather is relatively mild. Early on you might have days with just one arrow down even with the crappy clothing.
There are more cat tails in CH along bear creek.

The meat from the deer your harvest for your hides will also feed you for a day each.

There are definitely enough resources in ML to last more than 10 days. I usually die from something stupid like getting mauled by a wolf.

In any case, thanks for the advice. Majorly helpful.

Have you looked under the bed in the tower? Under the stairs in the lower dam? In the control room on a shelf in the upper dam? 3 solid spawn points.

It's not necessary for so long. Maybe if you want to truly loot all maps early. But crafting your gear takes time. And you really need it given how cold it gets.

In my current game I looted PV, ML, CH and DP and then settled down in CH to craft. Spent a long time there. I returned to TMW between days 50 and 60 to make a run for the summit. Then I moved my stuff to ML. Now I can either make make a quick visit to BR or check out MT and maybe HRV
