The description of each map is quite good and should help you choose.

But, yes, maps are connected together so the only thing this will change is how hard your early game will be.

I enjoyed Milton Town on my first games, it´s full of loot, have at least two nice bases to be in, and you´ll have to learn how to deal with wolves because there are PLENTY of them even on the voyageur level. It´s a bit harsh to travel from there for newbies but you don´t even need to travel, you can live there for months.

After you die in MT you can start a game at Coastal Highway that has a friendly and intuitive map.

Till a new player find out how to dress decently and how much load he can carry, plus with zero map knowledge, travelling is kinda an adventure that would end most of the games.

CH is a forgiving starting map. tons of resources and shelter on sub loper

I'd also recommend Mystery Lake or Coastal Highway. They both have fishing! Well, so do Pleasant Valley and Bleak Inlet but the weather on those maps... :lunar2020horrifiedrat:

Top three recommended beginner starting maps are Mystery Lake, Mountain Town, Coastal Highway

So... is no one else going to recommend Forlorn Muskeg? Disappointed!

Best map for falling through the ice :D

Honestly - never considered Coastal Highway "easy" or "good place to start". Yes, a lot of loot, but other than that - huge amount of very inconviniently located hostile wildlife and higher parts are hard to navigate without knowledge.

That said IMO it does not matter. Each map has its "+" and "-", apart from few obviously hard ones (i'd say Hushed River Valley, Bleak Inlet and Forlorn Muskeg) every other map is fine.

I will take the opposite viewpoint. I've always thought Mystery Lake is overrated as a "beginner" map because I always run into a ton of wolves and pick up a ton of sprains while constantly going up and down the hills throughout Mystery Lake. Coastal Highway is much flatter overall, and you usually have better opportunities to spot the predators from afar while you're in the early stages of looting the map.

Harsh River Valley xD

Mystery Lake and Mountain Town are the friendliest starts for a beginner. I rate Coastal Highway as Intermediate because of the hostile wildlife which can surprise you on hilly terrain, and navigation difficulty up in the hills. I could see CH being an easy map on Pilgrim with passive wildlife, but then everything is easy on Pilgrim.

And this is why i say it is mostly a personal thing. Different challenges are harder for different people.

I hate CH even having played for stupid amount of time and knowing it perfectly. I never go there without some sort of self-defence. Flare gun preferrably. And it is really hard (impossible?) for me to judge how it will be for a new player at this point.

My logic behind this? It is not harsh weather, needs or terrain that ends runs - it is wildlife in like 99% of cases. And on anything but interloper it is often multiple animals in one place - single one will not mean death. In CH if you want to loot you have to go into places with a lot of wildlife. It is not just "a lot of wildlife", this is present everywhere, but the fact that it is concentrated around places you are going to loot. Gas station is probably the most dangerous place to be in whole game, worse than BI even, because timberwolf pack at least is one "entity" you need to keep track of. Here you have a bear, a moose, and 3-5 wolves from different sides. It is a dethtrap. In ML there are bad places too, like derailment, but you can simply avoid them alltogether and still get like 90% of the loot from the map.

Also - the purpose of this is not to argue, but merely to express my opinion.
