Wolves were afraid of fire, but now it's not 100%.
So.. To answer to your question.. No, you are not safe at the fire. Harvest bit by bit, and don't have any meat on you while cooking.. And crouch.. Always crouch..
but I was never attacked in the cave.. So.. I don't know about that..
My wolf hunting is.. Go straight to them.. Aim.. Let them run at me, and just put an arrow in their head just when they are about to jump at me.. Same as Atheenon does in his videos..
As for bears.. I try to find a rock where I can be kinda safe or close to building/car.. I never use fire for hunting.
Yes bear can attack you inside a cave, with fire running (BR cave near Hunter blind).
So I didn't find this out on purpose. I was in Coastal Highway at the lookout tower and I had just deployed the rope it was nice outside and I just needed to get my exhaustion level above the carrying capacity mark so I could climb down real quick. I didn't even know the bear came UP THERE?!? I heard the bear, but I thought to myself that it was just down below and I could wait it out on the ledge down there. I placed down my bedroll, selected 2 hours of sleep as that's all I needed and then I heard the bear charging. I thought my run was over, but when I woke up, I turned around and the bear was running away from me towards the direction of the coal mine to PV.
Definitely seems like an exploitable bug, but I haven't gone out of my way to test it more thoroughly.
I can never get a head shot when they stall by the fire, so I lose too many arrows. I use the same technique as marejov83, but I take off my hats and gloves first. works more times than not.
of course, my first tactic to deal with wolves is to RUN
