Is there a way to enable player marker on map for survival?
I get that there is an in-game reason. I get that people wants that "hardcore" experience or something. But, sadly, my short term memory is not what it used to be... I struggle at remembering places in a videogame.

I'm wondering if this is an option in the game I perhaps missed. Or if there is a way to enable it so I can just enjoy the game and not be constantly scared to wander off since I can so easily get lost. :(

If you do a google search I believe there was some cheat engine mods that enabled a map marker, but due to updates im not sure if the mod developer continued to support it. hope that helps good luck

What I would actually want is an arrow on the map like in story map... =/

I don't mind drawing the map but without compass it's kind of confusing to me. And I cannot use the sun as reference like I usually do in most survival games. That's what usually gets me confused and lost.

Would be great if the developers could add this as a an option in custom difficulty... Would make the game way more enjoyable to me. Usually I use the sun in games to get around that kind of limitation. (early game minecraft is a prime example.) But, it's not really an option here.

I totally agree, I think making it only available in Custom would be a fair trade off. Hell they finally added an Auto Walk key with this past update I've been begging for that since beta haha, hopefully they will continue to add certain QoL options like the map marker.

Just play on single map so long until it gets under your skin.

You know after so much time I spent in mystery lake ti is like real location of my life for me - could navigate here blindfolded with zero visibility now even if I dont play the game for months :p

Otherwise I udnerstand your request but try look behind convenience - being lost in fog or blizzard (or simply being lost - and after lot of walking found your own footprints realizing zou walk in circle..) for a day, using last match for fire and sleep in some improvised shelter, finding you are on compeltley different location than you wanted once wake up and abrely survive to get back home to some shelter - that is experience that make the game (otherwise will get boring fast). Dont rob yourself from it.

The issue with such marker is that it would render the weather toothless. Right now, there is a very real risk for you while travelling in blizzard or at night of losing your orientation, running in circles, missing your intended destination. It's one of the most powerful elements of this game - Mother Nature is not to be taken lightly.

With compass and a big arrow "You are here and facing this way!", suddenly this danger disappears.

The game world is full of iconic landmarks that you will, over time, commit to memory, and they will help you in navigation.

I used to have the same opinion as you have, when I was new to the game (December 2015). Back then, there was no map - not even the charcoal map.

But within 3 months, I realized how much more powerful and immersive the "Navigate by landmarks" system is, and am glad that there's no compass and no "You are here" marker on the map.

I don't care if it renders anything toothless. Where would be the harm of adding such an option in custom difficulty? Story mode already has that. I mean, don't like it don't use it.

Also, I think people here struggle to understand what I mean by memory issues. It is not an overstatement.

PS: Besides... I can basicly make blizzards a non-issue in custom difficulty.

It's not uncommon for a brain injury - like from a car accident - to cause severe memory issues. While I understand that getting lost is a core part of the game, I also would like this as an option. I have kids & a busy life & don't have the hours to dedicate to learning & memorizing the maps.

Making it custom only would be a good compromise.

Yeah I'm still with Thermal on this one, I dont understand why some people care if the game is made easier if that difficulty decrease has to be made by choice, if your afraid you as a player will be tempted to use the option than thats on you, not on Thermal for wanting it. I know plenty of people who told me in the past that i was a "casual" for wanting an auto walk option in a game where walking is mostly what you do. But here we are today with an Auto walk in the game. I believe Hinterland will do good by their fans no matter how they like to play the game.

P.S I dont want this to come off as me insulting anyone or being angry thats not the intent! I just want Thermal and anyone else with memory issues to be able to experience this beautiful game in a way comfortable for them.

This isn't a feature I would use, but I'm not opposed to adding it. However, I don't know that the devs would see this as being consistent with the idea of the game, which is using your environment to survive which means navigating using the available tools, such as by memorising landmarks, or using the new map tools to mark routes. There is a wishlist forum in the discussions hub - maybe post this suggestion there, if you haven't already.

Watch this - new navigation tools for 'The Long Dark' (official video).
When in-game, after you start a charcoal map these can be used to mark locations on map:

They sure did find it consistent enough to add it to story mode. Not having the option for custom difficulty is what feels inconsistent to me.

Yeah, those we're nice additions. But, this isn't my issue. My actual issue is trying to remember where I am. I basicly have to completely orient myself all over again constantly. :(

I know it's weird. But, im not exactly expecting "normal" people to understand how much it drags the experience down for me.

I understand your point but the whole story mode is a departure from some of the core themes of the game such as isolation. You meet NPCs in the story mode, but never in survival. No harm in suggesting it in the wishlist forums. There are suggestions that have been taken on board such as autowalk.

It is different be "against" and encourage people dont rob themselves from game experience - that is made by large part by exploring and getting familiar with locations - same as being lost and encounter difficulties like being repeatedly lost, even death is part of game experience.

As side note I am actually very glad they added option to DISABLE this in Wintermute:p
