Crafting clothing should improve repair skills
Crafting clothing from hides should be tweaked to massively improve sewing/repair skills. It's only logical. I'm playing a stalker game in which I have a lovely suit of crafted skin clothing, but I can't reliably repair any of it because my repair skill is at 1. I just wasted an entire deer hide trying to fix some pants, and a pile of scrap cloth trying to repair some scavenged clothing. Even a novice couldn't be that bad!

Anyone agree?

Yeah it's a huge let down after you invest so much playing time and in-game resources getting that stuff. You ultimately lose everything you invested, directly and indirectly, including time (food/water/fuel), medicine (for injuries), ammunition/arrow shafts, etc. It's definitely a game design flaw in that it is a sort of gameplay bottleneck--everything you do, and invest in, ultimately comes down to a roll of the dice when repairing clothing.

I know it is probably a good metaphor for life, but it screws up the game!

I hope the devs give this a tweak and make it more forgiving in the next update.

It is a little skewed to be able to make hide clothing before you can reliably repair it. I suggested before, make it so you can't create it until your sewing skill is above level 1. Level 3 might be a good starting point. However, it does take a LOT of repairing regular clothes to get there.

But as was stated by the dev's these skills are first pass and subject to change. I'm sure we'll be seeing changes to leveling skills and clothing in general. Such as layering, which would buy us some time getting our skill levels up.

Something else I've done after ruining 3 deer hides on repairing boots is just make another pair when condition gets too low. Sure you may end up with a few pair lying around, but it saves potential ruining of hides. Besides, unless you play minimal deer hunting after a certain time you end up with an abundance of hides anyway.

It will be interesting to see how it all ends up. I hate it when I lose a piece of cloth or hide but-imagine how PO'd you would be if half way thru crafting a bear hide bedroll and the game gave you the failed message.

The percentage chance on repairs needs to disappear entirely. That kind of gambling on repeairs doesn't make a game fun. It makes it ridiculous.
The dev should focus on how well the item was restored by a +/- insulating bonus. And or have different types of sewing kits (cloth/leather) like for hats and pants and so forth.

Agreed.

Crafting clothing should increase your Mending skill level. And we definitely need Reasearch Books for the Mending and Archery Skills. Both Skills are painfully slow to level up without them, compared to other Skills.

Along the same lines..and prob not a popular suggestion :P But when you start crafting, you should have the same learning and improving process as mending, cooking, stripping a carcass etc. I don't see how you can instantly craft a wolfskin coat..you should have the same chance of failing that as you do of repairing your socks..until you build up the skill. Maybe build up the crafting skill with a few dressed bandages and make a couple of snares and torches. Then when you've improved a bit, you can attempt the more complicated crafting items.

Just because you have instructions on how to craft something, doesn't mean you won't have a chance of screwing it up until you practise a bit. Especially if you are new to crafting in this manner, as we assume the protagonist is.

As I said..prob not popular, burt more realistic.

Aside from that, I do agree with the OP.

wait you can die by fire... i did not know this!

Um, yeah. If you walk into a campfire, even one in ember stage, you get the Burn Affliction. And it will ruin clothing and hit your condition. If you don;t have the right first aid supplies to treat it, your condition drops. Have it happen in a blizzard, far away from safety and supplies to treat the affliction and get a change of clothing or repair your clothes to warm up... Dead by Fire.

Totally takes alot of effort and lack of preparedness and klutziness to die by fire. Don't ask me how exactly I know this though... xD

Been there, done that. It it much harder to do now though. The first time I got "burned" was when you could light a fire that was close enough to burn you. That first time I was headed into the long dark before I realized what I had done.
AAAARGH! Nov 15, 2016 @ 4:50pm
The player/character should automatically step over fires. That is a stupid mechanic. I can't tell you how many fires I have stepped/hopped over or even stepped in (with adequate footwear) IRL without burning myself or damaging my clothes.

I decided early on to repair deer hide boots only if I was short of guts or not near a workbench. It only takes 2 hide to make them and you can harvest one hide from the deteriorated boots. So why risk losing a hide trying to repair when you can make a new pair with just crafting time -- assuming you have sufficient guts and have a workbench handy.

Yes @IFIYGD I agree with you. I had the bedroll inside the Engine on TWM and then walked into the campfire ruined my characters clothes....and then a blizzard struck. Thought he could slept to recover but then he just faded away into the long dark......

I have burned myself three times over two different sandboxes. Once from trying to access a fire that was being blocked by burned out campfire graphics, the other two times by being stupid though now I compulsively check where my finger is on what movement key before moving when near a fire.

The first time taught me that you need bandages to bind the injury. Old man's beard wound dressings won't work. They probably should but that is game mechanics for you.

Leather boots and pants should actually offer some protection from burns. A leather apron is a standard safety item for anyone using a forge, so if your crafted pants and boots are in decent condition there should be a buffer added, even if it's small. You can actually use a hide to build a fire on ice, and reuse it several times ~ so the damage from just getting too close to a fire, or walking through one should be less than if you are wearing jeans and sneakers.

I absolutely agree that the mending skill needs some tweaking. A novice isn't going to 'repair' a worn garment to 'new' condition, but someone who is experienced with sewing can patch something that not only holds together, but has some insulation/warmth value. I've grumbled about that more than a few times since it was added as a skill (although using a piece of scavenged cloth to repair socks, sweaters, toques, and scarves was never realistic. Those should require yarn salvaged from like items, not 'cloth').
