How does the map work?
What I'm supposed to do to see something on the map?

1. Pick charcoal from burned out fireplaces, stoves, furnaces, and campfires. If the option is not there, then there's no charcoal to collect. A fire that burns for at least1 hour will produce one or more pieces of charcoal.

2. When at a suitable outdoor observation location, and under good visibility conditions, equip the charcoal - either from inventory (click EQUIP on Charcoal), or, more practically, from the radial menu (hold SPACE --> bottom option --> top option).

3. A hint will appear that says that left-clicking means "SURVEY LOCAL AREA". Click.

Please note that this is a time-consuming process, so make sure you don't freeze to death while mapping.

Thanks a bunch!. Is this just temporary or is the location permanent revealed after that?

It's a little more complicated, it's best if you discover for yourself. Once you see it in action, it will be obvious.

Clarifing a couple bits here:
1) LD-SK is right that fires that burn 1+ hours will produce charcoal, as a rough guideline, it's 1 hour per piece of charcoal (ex. 4 hour fire = 4 charcoal)
2) Areas revealed on your map stay revealed, but resources that you gathered before revealing will not be shown, even if they respawn. (ex. gather Cedar Limb then map, Cedar Limb won't be shown, even if it respawns)
3) The map will only show areas in your Line of Sight or areas nearby that you have walked through. If you can't see it from where you're standing, it won't show up. (ex. the trailors in Hibernia Processing won't appear if you're on another side of the building)

Also, it is not a "GPS" map, there is no "you" marker on it. you are only drawing what you see, to orient yourself, check on the land marks that you can see and those in the map.

Cool. I´m just back after several months of hybernation. Allways been wanting this option. Too bad I dont really need it since I know the areas, with expeptions of Forlorn Muskeg, like the back of my hand.

Or perhaps they come in use in other ways?

And perhaps there is a new area after FM, havent looked... Time to fire up TLD again I guess.
