How do i cook meant without a pot?
I can't seem to figure out how to cook raw meat without a pot/ There used to be a cooking tab when you clicked on a fire but that is gone now. The wiki says it is possible to cook meat without a pot. Is the wiki out of date?

Dammit i figured it out 10 seconds after i posted this. You have to put it in your radial menu and then click place.

You can also drop a piece of raw meat as a decoy and move it over to the stone :steamhappy:

Though, don't drop your cooked meat with the decoy button! Or else a wolf will eat it. All. Once I dropped half a moose of raw meat outside the PV porch (the inside was packed with deer wolf and bear meat) straight from the inventory, and cooked the other half of the moose. I dropped the cooked meat with the decoy button in a nearby pile, and I came back a couple days later after making a run to CH for supplies, and the whole pile was gone. :steamfacepalm:

Heheheh

I can confirm this does happen.

They'll eat the meat if its in their patrol zone, regardless of how you dropped it. (I've watched them steal fish from the around huts in ML plenty of times) But they do it more frequently when you drop as decoy.

You're fine though if you only do this with meat your cooking. For meat 'storage' drop from the inventory.

Can you also do this on stoves or does it have to be a bonfire?

Yep. You can cook meat (or any other food) on a bon fire, stove or firebarrel. Aswell as boil / melt water, assuming you have a container to do it in.

1. Hold SPACE (Radial menu).
2. Go to the "food" submenu.
3. Locate the raw meat (if it is there; if your food submenu is filled with other edibles, you're doing something wrong :-) )
4. RIGHT-click the raw food.
5. Move the cursor towards the highlighted spot on the campfire/stove/oven.
6. LEFT-click to place.

Well I just drop all the stuff on the floor and place it on whatever heat source :) Radial menu doesn't let me select which exact piece of food (cos it only shows a few), which is crucial for best outcome sometimes.

So, Backpack > Food > Drop > Place. This is my choice.

Then what advantage does cooking with a pot give me?

Cooking meat in a pot is faster (roughly 25-33% faster, I didn't do the math), so you save on fuel.

Not only is it faster, but it also prolongs the time after finishing cooking and before it gets burned, so you get more "room for error" - more time to pick it up from the stove/oven/campfire.

You can add vegetables and spices to make a nice rabbit stew. :rabbitTLD: 😁

No you can't, you liar. :) You can in The Forest, but not in The Long Dark.

Yeah it's just faster.
