Revolver is useless against wolves??
I've had a lot of trials and errors with firearms while playing the long dark. This time I got a revolver to 100% with the cleaning kit. I fired at 2 wolves about to lunge at me, the pistol definitely hit them, there was blood, but it didn't kill them or stop them from attacking me!

They nerfed the revolver quite a bit recently, it used to be stronger but it can still bleed anything out given enough time after shooting it once.

Just to give you an idea of how much they nerfed it, you used to be able to kill bears with a cylinder or two of ammo without letting them bleed out or headshots/crits, now it took me 4 cylinders recently to kill one without waiting for it to bleed out or headshots/crits.

Okay, is the rifle any better?

Rifle does more damage, yeah, and has the ability to crit with skill levels.

I'd suggest using the rifle when hunting bigger game, or whenever you cant afford to let them bleed out.

Hm, I find that the revolver generally 1 hits wolves if aimed at the head. If it doesnt kill, it usually scares them away, till they bleed out.
Worst case scenario, I hit them so late they still attack me, but then they're usually driven off almost instantly.

Timberwolves seem much tougher than normal wolves, though, taking more hits. Particuarly with how ammo crafting works, I might use a rifle in Black Inlet for defense.

Afaik the only way to instantly kill animals is to score a critical hit? Revolver is really bad for that, considering it got less of a crit chance and is very inaccurate, making it harder to hit the head.

Using up even a single cylinder seems like a big waste. Just use the rifle/arrows, they are extremely good at killing bears.

Definitely not normal, you got massively lucky with a critical hit.

Yeah either a critical headshot or something.

Had to fire 2 shots point blank to wolf's face to kill. Rifle is much better, as it kills everything in 1 shot in the face from close distance. Even bears don't struggle and offer to harvest their guts immediately.

It's good that you check that you bled them, do that for all animals. Wolves (only) have a chance of healing up. So if you don't need the meat or pelt, conserve ammo by just taking one potshot and pass by them.

If you're below 100 days: Leveling up Revolver skill helps, and you can conserve ammo by finding and reading gun books. Crafting ammo is a separate skill and does not skill up your weapon skill.

There's always a chance for a crit doe. Skilling up increases the chance, and so does crouching and energy (fatigue meter). If you desperately need a kill for survival reasons, consider stimming/drinking coffees/energy drink.

You can track your killing progress under Journal/Stats tab. Happy Hunting! :fcp_bear:

I just shot one of the classic buggers straight between the eyes from closeup. That didn't hinder this furry annoyance to attack me. Hello? Shooting from that closeup well aimed and yet, the wolve didn't seem to care at all. That is really is a turn off in the current version of the game.

It's very random, just one shoted one with the revolver, but as often they survive same single shot in the head and engage you (then challenge is ultra short and they die after some fleeing, but they still damage your clothes or cause some concussion), or more rarely they directly flee.

Bow looks more reliable if you can manage the headshot (but naturally it's harder to land it when the wolf is dodging/charging), or rifle of course.

I usually try to shoot them from farther away so I have 2 chances to kill him or scare him before he gets me. I've had really good success with this. The rifle is pretty much a guaranteed insta kill if the wolf is coming at you head on, but I've recently gotten rid of the rifle altogether because its so damn heavy. I use the revolver and flare gun for defense, and the bow for hunting.

If you fire to late, the wolf will still charge you. I had weird results; sometimes the wolf, after being hit, just strikes you once and then instantly flees, sometimes he does a normal attack. Quite strange.

One thing Ive recently tried was to just shoot the wolf in the side while he's in the dodging phase before he attacks you. Seems like doing that will a) cause the wolf to run away and b) bleed out slightly later.
Only done so a few times, but it seems reliable?

At what range and where do you shoot the wolf?

The devs aren't very knowledgeable about hunting apparently. Reality check: All revolvers that size are fine for varmints which are rabbits and wolves in the game. A .303 rifle round under 100 yards delivers enough energy to tear wolf meat up terribly. It is too powerful for wolf. Deer have far tougher hides and require a proper rifle round to reliably take them. Brown bear needs a .303 rifle round minimum for a kill and it needs to be in a good location. Black bears can be taken with varmint class rifles. Grizzly bears require high powered rifle rounds that are not found in the game. .303 is pretty weak for Elk but proper shot placement with iron sight distances you should be fine. "Pump house" shots needed for bear. A revolver like in the game is excellent for wolves if you are accurate. Rifle rounds need to be varmint class to avoid nearly tearing a wolf in half and ruining the precious meat.
