There are two forges in game. One in Forlorn Muskeg and one in Desolation Point. The one in DP is a bit easier as far as access to scrap metal and coal is concerned.

Keep in mind that on anything but Interloper you don't really need to forge tools. There are tons of knives, hatchets and whetstones around. And the knife is the only tool you really need a lot. A hatchet is less useful than it appears

If you are going to craft arrowheads, improvised knife or inprovised hatchet, you need to go to one of the 2 forges in the current game world. The one in Forlorn Muskeg, or the one in Desolation Point. You will also need scrap metal, plenty of firewood, and plenty of coal- the Forge Furnaces require coal to produce enough heat to forge anything.

There is no way to make a forge... you have to brave the dangers getting to one of the existing ones, and be prepared to stay there for a while forging. Lots of water... you can starve for a while, but you will need water for the amount of time it takes to craft a full set of tools. Regardless of the experience mode, you are playing, but especially in Interloper.

***HOT TAKE ALERT***
The hatchet is superior to the knife in wolf battles.

(piles wood, lights fire, slowly backs away and watches thread burn)
LOL

If you carry around a 1.75 kg improvised hatchet just for that you may as well carry a 2kg hammer instead :p

You have to find forge. You will also need some coal in order to get temperature high enough to forge.

Locations:

Forlorn Muskeg, from Mystery Lake follow railroad until you reach Tunnel Collapse location. Other forge is in Desolation Point. Dead end area you can reach from Coastal Highway. If you follow the road near coast it will lead you to Commuter's Lament location, from there to Crumbling Highway (transition zone) and eventually to the Desolation Point.

And not a single "git gud". Nope. No better and more helpful Community on Steam, IMHO. It's a shame how many bad Communities there are on Steam. This one is refreshingly different. And I love that you also used spoiler tags, to not give spoilers out to new players, who may not want them. :)

Something that might help as a guide. Nothing wrong with carrying a literal ton of coal, etc., to the forge, but maybe some information?

10 Coal (minimum of 7)
10 scrap metal
2 cloth
10 hours (of forging time, about)

Get 1 improvised knife, 1 improvised hatchet, and 4 arrowheads. Alternately can get 20 arrowheads or 2 knives and 1 hatchet (add 1 cloth).

You will need wood, food and water (duh) of course.

Good luck.

Yeah. It never ceases to amaze me what people are capable to say one to another on internet. Things that they would never say to another person face-to-face. But not here.

Thank you for noticing my spoilers! :steamhappy: Sometimes i'm smart like that! :steammocking:
Most of the time i'm not, sadly.

Thank you very much, I suppose if I find another rifle I could live without arrows? My rifle had to be left at Milton basin due to the weight!

Yes - if you’ve found one rifle already (which means you are playing on Pilgrim, Voyaguer or Stalker), you will very likely find others (at least around one per region and sometimes more). Obviously it depends a lot on where you are, etc but I would guess that as a general matter, finding another rifle is likely to be less hassle than crafting arrowheads and a bow.

There are plenty of good reasons to make the effort to get your bow/arrows made and used (lighter, faster bleed-out, etc) but it isn’t an absolute necessity except on Interloper.

True, but the hatchet causes bleeding. Kinda pushes it past the hammer for me. It's situational. Either you want to get out of the fight quickly but come away with nothing, or you want to risk some damage for a hide & calories.

Just my opinion though. This topic has been beaten to death on this forum several times already. Hence my joke about the hot take lol. :steamhappy:

Improvised hatchet is probably the 2nd worst weapon in the game, (there are threads). Hatchet best, but Hammer gets them off quicker. In vger i use knife because i know i'm gonna have a wolf pelt. in stalker i use the hatchet cos it gets them off quicker and i might have a pelt. in loper.......well i leave that to the experts and they all suggest the hammer

The rifle and the bow are two very different things. The bow is something you can carry around with all the time use for self defense if necessary. The rifle is far too heavy for that. It's a hunting weapon you only pick up when needed. Too many newbies think they need the rifle to defend themselves from wolves.
Even when hunting the bow causes animals to bleed out faster if you don't kill them right away

The bow is also a lot more fun to use. Takes a lot of practice though to judge distances
