Favorite Place to Live? Favorite Food?
Have any of you wondered where you'd "live" if this were a real life place? Funny enough- I grew up near a town called Milton, in Canada, and walking around the game boards sometimes reminds me off winters back home. But I think I'd have to say I like the coast and Pleasant Valley best. I love a meal of beans, peanut butter and crackers with an herbal tea and Pinnacle Peaches for desert. lol

I will say the Summit and moose.

Favourite place has got to be Mountaineers Hut, TWM, it's a hide-a-way I've hankered after in RL for ever. Of course I would fix the roof and the shutters and cover the hole in the door with a wolf skin. All it lacks is some more storage, but in RL I would fix that by digging a cold storage for food and building a small shed nearby for surplus gear, like a sled and snow shoes etc. It would be my go to place when life just got too much. It's hot tomato soup and condensed milk and peaches to follow for m please. :steamhappy:

If this was 'real' - I'd end up in that cozy Waterfront CH house closest to DP. Then, every Saturday night, I'd travel w/coal to the top of the DP lighthouse and build a huge fire :camp_fire: , hoping that someday a ship would finally appear off of my frozen shore. :Likes: Until then I'd live off of maple-smoked Coho salmon.

If I could live RL on any spot on any map I would choose the Forestry Lookout. I love 360 degrees of views and the daily stairs workouts would be great. :)

As for meals...I already eat a LOT of peanut butter and crackers so please give me more.

The blue house with the fireplace across from Quonset. If I didn't have something to tinker with I'd go nuts, but teaching myself automotive theory and trying to figure out why an internal combustion engine would stop working due to an aurora would be a neat puzzle. It's probably the electronics, so throw them out and start with the basics. And I'd scrounge a heap of computers - I wouldn't be able to help myself - and get the noisiest lamp/clock/radio I could find plugged in and ready to wake me up in the event of an aurora to see what worked. Actually, I'd end up having the front room half cleared of furniture with bits and pieces of projects shoved all over the place.

*sigh* I'd have to start up a grow-house in the garage and find some way to keep it warm, because other than going through every single strong pain pill I could scrounge on the island(the majority of which wouldn't work for me any more because I hit the resistance point during chemo last year) I don't see any other way of long-term pain management. I'll edit this bit out if that kind of reference is innapropriate in some countries etc, but unless I become good friends with a compounding chemist post-any-apocalypse, my medication is screwed, and it's kinda important.

Maybe they'll have the chick with the laptop and glasses(in the intro) vape a dose(smoking anything is terrible for asthmatics) or two for severe pain management during an aurora as a nod to players like me? The people that love these survival things, because irl we'd be stuffed as soon as our inhalers/pain/anxiety/antidepressant/cancer drugs ran out, so it's great escapism.

And I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hate peaches. What I wouldn't give for a shipment of tinned PEARS, long-life lactose-free milk, and some REAL COFFEE(ground for french-press, because you can cheat and make a decent cup with a tea bag/strainer and a teaspoon) instead of this powdered nonsense.

And I'd have to improvise a decent pie-crust out of crackers, because I hate venison except in a pie. Maybe improvise some stews with meat? Wonder if those mushrooms would stir-fry? I'm trying to think of some way to make a regular diet of game meat palatable, when it's not australian natives(some are farmed, some are culled, really rich and make great pies). I'd probably swipe all the snack bars and otherwise live on cattails and coffee. If they introduce alchohol, I'd ban anyone else with me from drinking it, unless it's medicinal or for cooking so it'd last longer. Ginger wine for head-colds - tastes utterly feral imo, but boy does it help clear the sinuses.

Man...I want the higher level cooking skill to unlock recipes now...
Step one - find a recipe book with legible recipe,
Step two - substitute ingredients with what you have available(venison instead of beef, crackers instead of breadcrumbs etc),
Step three - cook it as best you can depending on what you've got available(if you've got pots and a stove you've got more options than just grilling over a fire barrel, for example baking),
Step four - eat it and hope it doesn't make you sick, or just taste terrible.

Imagine the kind of buff a *real* meal would give you - all those delicious calories in one sitting - then imagine how many unrecoverable calories you'd lose if you screwed it up and made something inedible. Survival cooking is an unforgiving science, people.

I grew up in Canada, on a small acreage 30 minute drive from the nearest small town, and an hour away from the Rocky Mountains, so Pleasant Valley is my childhood basically creeks and all. But the Trappers Cabin suits me more, one room, evrything you need close by, no one to bother you.
I have had all the wild meats, and Elk is my fave, but out of TLD id pick Deer I guess, Moose is so hard to cook just right, Bear tastes weird imo. Never have had Wolf. Yikes!

I want to live next to Expectorate.

Honestly, that is a VERY good question, but a VERY hard one aswell.

I simply can't decide. Trapper's homestead, Forestry Lookout, Camp Office, Mountaneer's Hut, Draft Dodger's Cabin, Hunting Lodge, Paradise Meadows Farmstead, they all seem like good picks. Notice that most of these locations I named are kind of "off the trail" of other places. I like secluded places, far away from everything else. I like being alone, mainly why I'm playing games by myself as much as possible. :P

If I absolutely had to choose, I would probably say Trapper's Homestead. It's such a cozy place. and I could not imagine the feeling sitting in my green cozy recliner infront of a roaring fire, watching a blizzard outside. All while sitting in my cozy 65 degres cabin sipping a cup of coffee in my fisherman sweater. That, sounds cozy. It's truly the little things in life that make you happy.

As for food, It's hard to say. I've never eaten bear, moose or wolf IRL, so I can't speak about those. Though, I can't deny that I love rabbit. Going hunting in the middle of the winter with my friends, siblings, cousins, anybody I could round up that wanted to go. we got permission from a farmer around the area to go onto his property and hunt, and we sure did. every weekend. We'd start at 12PM and go to 6PM. the most I think we ever got was 14. there was me, three cousins, two of my friends, my dad and brother. We went home in the dark, with a sack load of rabbits. We'd process them, bread them and deep fry em. We'd mix up some gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, and that is one of the best meals a person could ask for. Sometimes, we'd light a bonfire outside and we'd all eat outside infront of the fire. Truly the little things in life. Good memories. :)

I prefer elk too! I just actually finished eating some venison steak and elk steak, and I really preferred the elk. I have had bear, and I liked it, but I inly had a little. It was really oily. Never had moose though. My family has had a ranch for generations where I grew up, and it honestly makes me think of pleasant valley too. It has the ranch house in the valley, some creeks, and gets really cold/snowy in winter.

If I were to live anywhere in TLD in real life, it’d probably be Trapper’s Homestead, since I think that stove would be a lot warmer than any fireplace. Plus it’s in a nice space for hunting and trapping, and I could really enjoy being “away from it all”. I agree with @Expectorate though; I’d want some real bean coffee. None of that instant stuff XD I guess when that ran out I’d make some out of dandelion when it got warmer.

Seems like it’s going to be crowded at Trappers lol! I’ve never gotten to have rabbit, but I’m hoping to soon. I’m just waiting to qualify for an in-state license before I go. Really, I’m planning to try to get most of my food (meat-wise) from fishing in summer, and then getting an elk and rabbits in fall/winter. All going well, I’m hoping I can say goodbye to store bought meat :D

Well Trappers and Camp Office do not have a bathroom and going out in a blizzard digging a hole with a crow bar or doing what the wild life do would not appeal to me in real life. I loved Milton House with the big stove and rack to hold rifles it was just like the homestead house in Pleasant Valley without the Unpleasant weather. I would be happy in Coastal Highway. Places to fish and hunting good. House on the shore with a work bench to tinker at. Love the tinned peaches. Can't understand why a huge piece of deer meat doesn't fill me up. Would last me at least four days. Why are dry bullrushes so filling? Salmon is my favourite fish. What no maple syrup! Oh my canadian friend was complaining they exported it all. My gain their loss. Love this game.:steamhappy:

Yeah, I try to avoid store bought food as much as possible too. That is why we raise our own pork and chickens too. We have a small flock of chickens that provide enough eggs for our family, and is well worth the money. we usually raise 3 or 4 pigs at a time and take one pig's meat for ourself and give the rest to friends or family. I love this lifestyle, it makes you feel much more self reliant than if you bought everything from other people. Plus, I've always liked animals and it's fun raising the animals and giving them the best life possible.

And yeah, back when we went hunting rabbits there were no liscenes nessicary. We'd bring along a shotgun or two, and the rest .22 rifles. The shotguns would be for when the rabbits are running and we'd give the .22 rifles to the ones who were good at shooting and could pick them when they are sitting in their "nest". (a rabbit nest is technically called a "set") Fun times back then. It's been years since we've done that, maybe I should invite them all to do it again sometime. :)

That’s great! I’m not able to have animals at the moment (apartment living while doing college) but my goal is to have my own land, a cabin, chickens, a few goats, garden, etc. I’ll get there eventually (I’m curious how many TLD players have a similar goal?), but in the meantime I’ll try to hunt my meat when I can. I even found a cookbook that uses wild game recipes (like rabbit pot pie) so I can’t wait to get to try some.

That's nice to see somebody that likes to get out there and have their own land, and be reliant upon one's self. It's sad, but those days seem to be over. back in (here in the U.S anyway) WW2, everybody had a flock of chickens, a "victory garden", aswell as goats or cows. I guess back then food was rare and expensive, so everybody invested into animals and farming. Nowadays, there's pretty much no real "need" to be reliant upon those things. Some people (myself included) raise animals and a garden because we like to feel like we provide for ourself better than the supermarket supplies us.

Yeah, It's pretty neat being able to supply food to yourself, without others. We use to have goats 15 years ago maybe, but they were too much trouble for what they were worth. They really do put the "goats have an iron stomache" stereotype into place. LOL!

We did not do a garden last year, but I'm planning it this year. Most of the time we'll put in green beans, tomatoes, corn, peas, onions and lettuce. This year I've ordered seeds for all of those aswell as zucchini, pumpkins, watermelon and canteloupe. I hope they do well. :)

Anyway, back on topic. :) The next choice of mine would very likely be Camp Office. It has a nice cozy armchair I could move upstairs to the fireplace and sit infront of. It has nice cozy warm beds so I can invite friends over too. It seems like a very warm, cozy, welcoming place to live.

Another choice would be one of those houses in Coastal Highway that have an indoor fireplace inside the living room. It has a kitchen, living room, (with a cozy fireplace and sofa xD) bedroom and bathroom. what more do you need? :D https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1463516015 (Not my screenshot :)

We had backyard chickens for a couple years, but I couldn't keep up looking after them properly with the chemo, so they went to a mate's place who's got 20-odd chooks already, plus goats, dogs and lord knows what else. Three more Isabrowns would fit right in there.

Though I hope they figured out which one wasn't bloody well laying and ate it...
