How to catch rabbits with snares?
So I leave snares on the open on more then one location and after a good night sleep i always find them empty.
I must be doing something wrong. Can anyone give me tips please.

There are set places of rabbits spawning, you must place snares to a rabbit spawn zone/place. If you see rabbits are roaming around then its the place of spawn, simply put a snare in center or anywhere around them and leave. After some time, you can get lucky with a rabbit in it

I was kinda wondering this too. I had placed two snares in a rabbit infected area for days and never caught a thing. Wasn't sure if there was more to it or not.

You actually need to leave the area for a little bit. Hanging around and waiting seems to ruin your chances, even if you think you're not noticed.

It has to be in their spawn area and I'm pretty certain it occurs overnight, when the game loads from sleeping or leaving your cabin. Also, I think how many rabbits are present affect it too - can't hunt the area clean. Spend a night or two at Trapper's Cabin with snares in the back and you'll get a hang of it. From my experience, if you place it in the right area, there should be a high probability of success. I would set up 3 and I would always have at least 1 and sometimes 2 with a rabbit in the morning.

Lots of threads about this for more detail but here's my quick consolidation of the key points:

Choosing a spot
- Watch the rabbits from middle distance (i.e. so they aren't reacting to your presence). Look for areas where a bunch of rabbit trails criss-cross - this is likely to be a 'rabbit patch'. Snares not placed in a rabbit patch will never catch a rabbit.
- You can also choose to put the snare directly across a rabbit trail - this sometimes works.
- The crest of the hill behind Trappers is a particularly good spot. Others include: in CH, the hollow just over the hill as you go uphill from the road outside the Fishing Camp, Jackrabbit Island (of course), Rabbit Grove. In PV, the patch near the start of the driveway that leads from the road to the Farmhouse. In TWM, the patch just past the saddle as you walk back towards the entrance to TWM from the Mountaineer's Hut (there's also a moose spawn around here sometimes, so be careful).

Checking your traps
- You will never see a rabbit snare trigger
- Each correctly placed snare will have a chance, once per day at dawn, of turning from a set trap into a filled trap (i.e. with a rabbit carcass, that begins to freeze from the moment it spawns), a ruined trap or no change (i.e. doesn't catch anything).
- My guess is that there are zones that are better/worse in terms of likeihood of catching a rabbit, but of course this is trial and error. But for the 'hot zone' around Trappers, if I have two snares placed properly, I virtually always get at least one rabbit and mostly get two, each morning.
- Be aware that a carried rabbit carcass is extremely good 'predator attractant'.

Happy snaring!

PS: Why have I payed so much attention to this? Simple: I can't hit a rabbit with a stone to save my life. Seriously, in more than 1700 hours, my total number of rabbits stunned, caught and killed using a stone is zero. I fear I will never get Stone Age Sniper... :-)

*cough* For stone age sniper, if you're dispairing, story mode has a quick save and quick load.

Noted, thanks! I'm saving Story Mode for a rainy day - still hung up on Survival. But useful to know, 'just in case'.

I usually set 4-6 snares in a staggered pattern. Very surprised when Wintermute gave me one snare that gave me a rabbit the next day. I will check the traps twice a day and if nothing gets caught I will move the set elswhere or put them inside because a blizzard will ruin them.

Nah, it can happen when you're wandering around (away from the trap of course)

My first rabbit was caught while I was actually heading back towards the rabbit spawn from the old lady's house, as soon as the rabbit was caught I unlocked the rabbit hide schematics

For stoning rabbits, I've found that you actually want to place the area between your fingers to the left of the rabbit. I crouch and slowly move in front of the rabbit so it's coming towards me, then throw the stone when they get super close. I guess you could think about making a triangle with the rabbit and your fingers. Good luck!

I asked about snares not stones! Read people!

Like other have said, just set in a spawn area (that's the only requirement) and forget. I usually leave them overnight.

Well I tried placing a snare at a area where several rabits were wandering and waited 2 days but got nothing. Did it again in another area and again nothing! :(

The only place I put snare is behind trappers.. Straight from trappers about 1 meter in front of the closest tree.. always have rabbit in the mourning.. or latter when I come back from some other place..
