Choosing a spot
- Watch the rabbits from middle distance (i.e. so they aren't reacting to your presence). Look for areas where a bunch of rabbit trails criss-cross - this is likely to be a 'rabbit patch'. Snares not placed in a rabbit patch will never catch a rabbit.
- You can also choose to put the snare directly across a rabbit trail - this sometimes works.
- The crest of the hill behind Trappers is a particularly good spot. Others include: in CH, the hollow just over the hill as you go uphill from the road outside the Fishing Camp, Jackrabbit Island (of course), Rabbit Grove. In PV, the patch near the start of the driveway that leads from the road to the Farmhouse. In TWM, the patch just past the saddle as you walk back towards the entrance to TWM from the Mountaineer's Hut (there's also a moose spawn around here sometimes, so be careful).
Checking your traps
- You will never see a rabbit snare trigger
- Each correctly placed snare will have a chance, once per day at dawn, of turning from a set trap into a filled trap (i.e. with a rabbit carcass, that begins to freeze from the moment it spawns), a ruined trap or no change (i.e. doesn't catch anything).
- My guess is that there are zones that are better/worse in terms of likeihood of catching a rabbit, but of course this is trial and error. But for the 'hot zone' around Trappers, if I have two snares placed properly, I virtually always get at least one rabbit and mostly get two, each morning.
- Be aware that a carried rabbit carcass is extremely good 'predator attractant'.
Happy snaring!
PS: Why have I payed so much attention to this? Simple: I can't hit a rabbit with a stone to save my life. Seriously, in more than 1700 hours, my total number of rabbits stunned, caught and killed using a stone is zero. I fear I will never get Stone Age Sniper... :-)
Nah, it can happen when you're wandering around (away from the trap of course)
My first rabbit was caught while I was actually heading back towards the rabbit spawn from the old lady's house, as soon as the rabbit was caught I unlocked the rabbit hide schematics
