To crack a safe is quite simple, start off anticlockwise (numbers going up) until you hear a loud click. Then turn the other way until it clicks again, then reverse direction again and look for the final click. If you go too far you need to spin the wheel all the way around to reset it and start from beginning again.
Since you are asking in general discussions, I am guessing you are playing Survival Mode, since that is what this subforum is set up for. So... use the arrow keys or [A][D] keys, or your controller's equivalents, and turn the dial left>right>left. If you pass any number, the tumblers will reset, and you will needs to spin the dial 1 full turn the opposite way, and start over. Go slow, it is a real pain to have to keep starting over. Once it clicks, stop. Then turn back the opposite way. When you unlock the third tumbler, stop, and in a second or so the "Open" button wiull come up at the bottm. Click that and loot. That safe will always be open for you from that point forward, and can be used like any other storage container.
Wintermute is the same, except there may be a safe already opened, and the bank Vault will be totally different, needing a code that you will find in one of the houses.
Don't be too shocked in Survival Mode if a safe has little or no valuable loot inside. Sometimes you hit the jackpot and get Mukluks. Sometimes you get a granola bar, or nothing. Just like lockers you need to pry open with a prybar. The contents are random from a pool of items. You are never guaranteed to get the same thing in Survival Mode, since there is no script like there is in Wintermute.
