I am guessing that XP was removed from supported Operating Systems because the latest update to the game, and upgrade to the game engine made the game not run well, if at all on XP, de to limitations in what that OS can handle. The new engine may require a 64 bit capable OS, which XP is not. The Store page also used to say "32 bit or 64 bit" for Windows (not sure about Mac or Linux), and that has also been removed.
So, you could buy the game and try it, on all of the lowest settings and see if it will even launch, but I am guessing it is not going to be pretty, or run well, even then, if it does launch for you.
XP is still a very stable OS, but it no longer gets any support from Microsft, so many game devs are moving away from supporting it in their games, and software devs 9like me) are moving away from supporting it for more mundane office type SW. You get no updates from Microsoft, and they cannot keep trying to make their game/SW work on outdated drivers, redistributables, and 32 bit systems. Keep the XP for school or offfice work, and save up to get a newer machie or upgrade to a newer OS.
The game isn't going anywhere, it will be here when you are ready and able to upgrade your rig.
And if you MUST find older versions, use Google. We are not alllowed to talk about how to do it here, though there may be a guide or 2 on Steam that tell you how to do so. You'll have to find them yourself.
