Seriously? The Game is Gender Locked?
Just fired the game up for the first time today buy really considering returning it for a refund. Seriously, you can only play a male character? Surely there is another way!

Unless you are playing Story Mode/Wintermute - the story starts with the male char McKenzie, the female char does not join the story until episode 3.

However if you are playing sandbox/survivore, that'll be the first time I've heard this complaint. I can play either the male char or the female char when I fire up a new game.

If you're playing survivor/sandbox and are absolutely sure you cannot choose the gender of your char it must be a glitch/bug - could you be so kind as to copy and paste this into the tech forum please.

I see. Where are you supposed to choose it? I can't post anything becuase there is nothing to post. The option never appears.

oh i think you are talking about survival mode. I am confused now. What is Wintermute then?
Nil Desperandum Nov 22, 2018 @ 9:34am
Are you playing Wintermute/Story Mode or Survivor/Sandbox?
Nil Desperandum Nov 22, 2018 @ 9:35am
Wintermute is the story mode of TLD it gives the lore for the game and acts as a tutorial. :steamhappy:

In survival mode, you can choose your gender.

But in story mode (Wintermute), it's only the male (Will) for the first 2 episodes. You will play the female character in incoming episodes.

Won't bother with the story then. lol.

When you log into the game there is a list of the choices. Wintermute is the top of the list - if you choose that you will be playing the story-mode of TLD

Survivor/Sandbox is the second choice in the list.
An obvious troll.

Opening main menu page- select "Survival Mode":
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1571269641

Then select which experience mode (difficulty) you want to play:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1571269823

Then select the sarting map you want to play on (except Interloper- Loper had 100% random starts on Advanced Maps only, you do not get to choose. All others. you can choose which map to start on...):
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1571270017

Then you can choose survivor gender, male of female:

(Challenge Modes you can also choose male or female, Wintermute you will play both, in different Episodes, no choice, you play both sides of the Story.)

As has been posted above, you can play as either gender in Survival mode, and in WINTERMUTE it will alter depending on the episode, since it’s telling a story.

Would be fun if we could play as Male, Female, of Jeremiah though XD I’d have a blast hearing his dialogue in survival mode lol.

Hey, I can't wait to play as Astrid in the story. Besides, poor Will needs a break - fella keeps damaging himself.

Has anyone noticed getting hurt more early in survival mode playing as Astrid, but skilling faster and just being kinda lucky? I mean it's probably just in my head, but I swear Will fares better getting chewed on by wolves, but can't find a weapon to save himself, and I play Astrid and first house I come to 'Oh look, a rifle!'. Probably just me.

In any case, 'gender-locking' story mode to each specific episode makes sense, because it's telling a story, and it looks like beginner mode belongs to Will the accident prone pilot. We'll get to 'level up' in episode three and play as Astrid the kick-arse doctor, probably with a bow(haven't made one of those yet in survival mode). It'll be cool.

Is this a serious question, or some kind of a meme?

All in your head. Both genders have the same stats, skills, and leveling in Survival mode, same carry weight, same everything, except voice ad the look of their paperdoll. Same clothes, same tools, same shoes, no differences in how they play. Just depends on what look and voice you feel more comfortable with.
