However if you are playing sandbox/survivore, that'll be the first time I've heard this complaint. I can play either the male char or the female char when I fire up a new game.
If you're playing survivor/sandbox and are absolutely sure you cannot choose the gender of your char it must be a glitch/bug - could you be so kind as to copy and paste this into the tech forum please.
But in story mode (Wintermute), it's only the male (Will) for the first 2 episodes. You will play the female character in incoming episodes.
Survivor/Sandbox is the second choice in the list.

Then select which experience mode (difficulty) you want to play:

Then select the sarting map you want to play on (except Interloper- Loper had 100% random starts on Advanced Maps only, you do not get to choose. All others. you can choose which map to start on...):

Then you can choose survivor gender, male of female:

(Challenge Modes you can also choose male or female, Wintermute you will play both, in different Episodes, no choice, you play both sides of the Story.)
Would be fun if we could play as Male, Female, of Jeremiah though XD I’d have a blast hearing his dialogue in survival mode lol.
Has anyone noticed getting hurt more early in survival mode playing as Astrid, but skilling faster and just being kinda lucky? I mean it's probably just in my head, but I swear Will fares better getting chewed on by wolves, but can't find a weapon to save himself, and I play Astrid and first house I come to 'Oh look, a rifle!'. Probably just me.
In any case, 'gender-locking' story mode to each specific episode makes sense, because it's telling a story, and it looks like beginner mode belongs to Will the accident prone pilot. We'll get to 'level up' in episode three and play as Astrid the kick-arse doctor, probably with a bow(haven't made one of those yet in survival mode). It'll be cool.
All in your head. Both genders have the same stats, skills, and leveling in Survival mode, same carry weight, same everything, except voice ad the look of their paperdoll. Same clothes, same tools, same shoes, no differences in how they play. Just depends on what look and voice you feel more comfortable with.
