When you start in Coastal Highway, chances are you find some pretty nice clothing. Pleasant Being the second coldest region, (IIRC Hushed Valley is the coldest) those clothes might come in handy. The other reason I loot PV early is because as days pass, the earth gets colder. So it's a good idea to loot the coldest regions before it gets colder! Another reason to head to Pleasant Valley is because most people avoid PV and in the late game they loot it, when most of the loot is decayed already. I made that mistake once. I migrated to Pleasant Valley (PV) on day 250 or something crazy and a good 70% of the loot I found was unusable. (That was on Stalker difficulty)
Anyway, the decision is really up to you. But, that's what I often do. But, Take my opinion with a grain of salt because PV is my favorite region and I might be biased. :)
Good luck!
Alternately, others are either contemplating or returning from a forge run at this point. I suppose that depends on what mode they're playing though. But if that interests you, Desolation Point is probably the natural choice.
Thanks!
In my experience getting fish is on one side not ideal because fish can be heavy (2-5kg) but at the same time it's always there and as long as you can fish it it's a sustainable food supply.
I do have some problems with wolves, my way of playing was to stack up sticks and other wood and once I get to the fish hut I close the door and start fishing.
With enough wood I can last a few days just cooking the fish and getting new drinkable water but as soon as I run out of the wood I need to start going back to a house and slowly gather new fire supply.
That is not a problem but during my time there I sometimes get 1/3 scent/smell and by default there are always 2-4 wolves close by, also one night there was the Aurora night and I tried to go to land from the fish hut only to realise 4 wolves are heading my way from different directions so I ran back to the fish hut and waited till the night was over.
I have 13 bullets but haven't found a rifle yet and I have been to maybe 80-95% of the houses there.
It's my first time playing on stalker so my goal was to stay close to the fish huts and get food by fishing as long as I can, because otherwise I risk too much if I start randomly going around.
Yes it's easy to fish but it's not that easy to plan your whole fishing trip, you need much wood to cook it all and to have enough time making new drinkable water and if you make 1 mistake by choosing to keep the fire going or not keeping the fire going it can ruin you 2 days of preparation depending on the weather for example, and also the wolves are close by patrolling.
Well to be fair, they have no rifle or bow. So fishing is his primary source of food, other than random cattails, granola bars, peaches or other junk food they find.
If you want to stay in Coastal Highway for a while longer to keep fishing, Here's a tip. Using rocks, you can stun rabbits and get their guts. With guts, you can make more fishing line, and then make a fishing tackle. To make a tackle, you need a hook and line. Hooks are made from scrap metal. If you have a hacksaw, you can cut up some metal pieces inside buildings (there are toasters, metal shelves, etc, that you can knock down for scrap metal) and get metal for hooks and keep on fishing.
Desolation Point is another good idea. There's a good chance to find a rifle there aswell as getting to forage a bunch of arrowheads and a lot of possibilities to make a bow. There is also a pretty good chance of finding a moose aswell! Beware though, Desolation Point has a LOT of wolves.
On stalker, struggling with wolves is usual, espcially on Coastal Highway. I've once seen up to ELEVEN wolves out on the ice, and that was not counting the possibility of wolves spawning in the Coastal Town or up in the hills. So, be careful where ever you go. :)
I'm not that good with hiting a bunny with the rock I always miss, but even if i were to hit it, would it take like 3-5 days for the gut to dry out so that I can use it in crafting? The lines have been my biggest issue, I got a hacksaw so I have hooks.
My biggest mistake so far was to choose to first take the meat and the hide of a dead deer and not the gut first, I took the meat, came back for the hide and took it but got attack by a wolf and needed a day or so to recover and then the deer was gone after that so I missed out on a gut cause I got greedy thinking that I could take all from the deer.
Also I didn't find a crowbar yet so some lockers and trunks I still didn't open, makes me think that a rifle could be there locked inside maybe...
The funny thing is, I got a few fish left on me and 1 has around 1800 calories so...there goes the 0.01kg of meat...I have no clear strategy when I catch a big fish, I usually try to keep it and eat it only when I got nothing left, to tank up for a big push to somewhere but maybe that's the wrong strategy.
If you're doing a lot of fishing, you really ought to take at least a few days to put up snares every morning. A week of trapping can net you months worth of fishing line.
Ideally you want to be able to fish without a fire on Stalker. Do your trapping and rabbit butchering in the earlier hours, and during the warmer parts of the day and on into early evening, do your fishing. Gotta' have good clothing and a fishing hut with a door for that, though.
