I've found it still works, I'm in PL (which is new for me after being away from game for 1-2yrs) I've got a hunting knife & 10 flares atm, & have only been surviving on them & torches while trying to find my way around & find gear. have found no caches this time round so far
I've looted Quonset in middle of 6-8 wolves, making "trail" of camp fire between houses.
Trow torch sometimes scare then, but don't rely in this.
A thing to notice is the high failure in lit camp fire, I have 4 failures in row - 2 using accelerator.
You have to look at him though. Walk backwards for a while, facing the wolf. Ideally you can save yourself in a house or car. Otherwise you can also sprint around a hill to break line of sight, this often loses the wolf.
The flashlight is the only lightsource you can carry that stops aurora wolves. Flares and (flame)torches no longer work. You can use the high-beam of the flashlight to stop the wolf. However, don't try the trick of switching to rifle and shooting them when they stop like that - they will attack as soon as the beam of light is off. Instead, back away and into a street-lamp spotlight, and snipe them from there.
Luckily, I just happened to notice a cache with a Flashlight. Wasn't easy to get to, but managed it without the wolf guarding it attacking.
