Optional filter for swearing?
Can we get an option added to remove swearing from displayed text and the voice overs? I like playing this in the Pilgrim or Voyager modes and my kids like to watch me play it. It is disconcerting to have swear words come accross the screen or the speakers. If the option to turn that off was available, both groups of thought would benefit: Those that don't use and prefer to not have swearing a part of their and their children's lives, and those that don't mind swearing.

Even when the game is released in it's full version, we could still have the option available to not have swearing enabled. I am a programmer and would be willing to do a few pull requests if it will help.

While I'm not opposed to the addition of a filter like that per se, I can imagine that it ranks near bottom on the devs' list of things to add or change to the game. Can't hurt to ask, I suppose.

Edit: Had to double check, but the game is rated T, with a tag for "language", so mild language is to expected.

I play with survivor commentary off in a custom setting survival.

I turn it off because I don't need constant remindes of things like cold and hunger, I keep track of those things myself and I prefer to mimic myself in the game. I don't talk to much when I'm alone in the woods.

But you could consider using that option for offensive language.

Yeah I think a filter would a good idea. In the meantime - you could do as I do and turn speech off and then insert my own profanity as and when I need it (j/k). Perhaps, when they release modding, maybe write an 'Anti Swearing mod removing all swearing from the game. :steamhappy:

I knew going in that it might have some language. I had just hoped that an option to filter or remove it would be available.

I look forward to having modding available. That will be a lot of fun!

I'll look at the custom option to remove some of the swearing. The part that really caught me off guard was the dramatic increase in swearing in the Wintermute story mode. The bots tend to get a bit more creative of their use of swear words. Are the "videos" of the hero and the bots customizable to remove swearing?

Not sure about the video's but those I think are getting reworked along with the rest of the story mode this winter.

You can always mod your own language localization pack in the workshop (or search to see if there is one already there that removes profanity). Language mods are what we have now in Steam Workshop, and the language mods do not affect achievements like other mod types in Workshop usually do.

Yes, it would take you some time. If a few friends who prefer completely profanity-free gameplay and you are using English, you could go through fairly quickly, changing only offensive words to something that you find more appropriate for your tastes, in an English Language mod. Or in whatever your native tongue may be. Once done, install it and run the game using it, and likely others who want a similar thing will be thankful for your work.

The Devs have stated in the past (couple years ago) in response to a similar request, that there would be no change to the script or voice acting.

the effort would be way too big for such a small change for only a few people.

Thank you, I will look into this. The game, without offensive language, has a lot more value to me and my children.

If I go and create a mod for the English language pack, could I customize the voice acting to be turned off and only show the visual text?

I understand the ratios the developers are considering. Just because this desire to be offensive-word-free is considered a minority in the user-base, it doesn't make it less important to that minority. I will implement any options I can, such as making an adjusted English language pack.

Yes. You can turn off the character voice in the main menu > Options> Audio (and >Display for subtitles).

Turn Voice to 0% in Audio: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1518554612

Turn Subtitles on in Display: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1518554748

Some people have reported hearing an "echo" or "whisper" of the voice overs, even wth Voice turned down to 0%, but I can't say if this is common, or due to headphones /earbuds/ certain speaker systems/ drivers. I've never heard any "echo/whisper", but I also am slowly losing some of my hearing from years of Heavy Metal headbanging 30-40 years ago. ;)
